Hi, my ps3 keeps turning off and the red light comes on and flashes real slow. what does this mean ? it crashed mid game

The red light means that the system has overheated well you can fix it yourself using a simple repair guide HERE

This is the red light problem the problem is internal overheating nothing you have done. To fix it you can use a good video guide or you can send it in to be fixed.

It has overheated. Send it to the shop you bought it from and they'll give you a new one.

You have got the YLOD (yellow light of death). The yellow means that there is an internal problem with your ps3 and the red mean overheating. My guess is that you have the older ps3 because those ps3 models have a designer flaw in the coooling system and if so your ps3 is most likely out of warranty which means you will need to send your ps3 to sony for $150(unless you can find someone to do it cheaper which is what I did).

switch it off from the back,, hold down the eject button, and turn it on from the back,, it should spit the cd out,,

The ps3 needs to be sent back to be fixed it is YLOD..<--not good
it will take at least 4-6 weeks before you get your Console back. And also, if your warranty is expired, you have to pay a big fat $150,- to get the job done!

Your hardrive has probably crashed. I have been trying to fix mine and after weeks of studying, i found out I need a new video card. If you have demos then my problem may be yours too. If you are trying to play games and it crashes, then it's the video card. The only game that works with a broken video card is Street Fighter 4, but you can't save. try this:
it works for slimline PS2. might work for PS3.
1) turn off PS3
2) unplug PS3 and wait a minute or two before plugging back in.
3) turn on PS3

it could also be overheating.

Putting batteries in controller
Turn on the PS3
Turn on controller
Press the sync button, the LEDs will flash rapidly
Insert the usb that comes with the controller, the LEDs flash slowly
Press the home button on the remote
READY.

that means that there has been a fatal system crash and cooked your gpu and cpu and is unrepairable it is the ps3 red light of death same as the xbox 360 red ring of death
