The control panel lights, clock, basically everything works. When you press a button to activate the microwave you hear it come on. It's noisier than normal, but you hear power or something that you normally hear when cooking with microwave. But nothing heats.

What are the chances that it could be the high voltage Capacitor?

  • shelleystewa Sep 28, 2009

Microwave not heating anything. Control panel worksand all of it's fuctions are working. So I know it is getting power and it is not the main fuse. The obvious solution is the magnetron. But I want to know if it could be the high voltage capacitor, the diode on the capacitor, the high voltage transfomer. Or any combination of those. When you press a button to "microwave" something, the mic makes the same "microwaving noises it use to, but a little louder than before. And prior to it stop working we had a lot of condensation in it. I have already located a new magnetron and taken the old one out. Should I be looking for anything else?

What coupler? I have the schematic diagram right in front of me and I do not see a "coupler". Can you be more specific?

You are a idiot! Thanks for wasting my time!

If the lights are on the turntable turns but no heat then one has to supect a burned out Magnetron.

If its under warranty get it fixed. If not consider the cost of repairs against a refurbished or second hand unit. The repair will often exceed the value of the unit.

The fuse controls all functions not just the magnatron.

Most likely coupler is faulty. If you are not getting power, than power supply or fuse is faulty. If it has power but no heat, then coupler is bad. You can get one and manual at repairclinic.com

If there are no lights on at all then check any external fuses. There is also an internal fuse and overload breaker that will prevent the unit from operating in the event of a serious failure such as the magnetron going faulty. This is the main component that provides the heating in a microwave oven. These are expensive to replace and the most cost effective thing to do is get a repair quote and most likely just buy a new microwave. Do not attempt to 'play' inside a microwave unless you are qualified to do so as serious injuries can result.

This will certainly be the magnetron or its high voltage power supply having gone faulty so you will need to get it to a repair centre or service engineer for a quote.

A defective diode or magnetron can cause the oven to sound differently and not to cook.

Microwave is on but won't heat.

When the microwave sounds okay, but there's no heat, one of the internal door switches, the high voltage circuitry, or the circuit board may have a problem. To resolve this problem, you need the assistance of a qualified appliance repair technician.

You can now purchase a new microwave for about fifty dollars at walmart so that may be cheaper than having a repair tech work on it.

Microwave won't heat anything

Yeah, it's time to invest in a new oven. The magnetron tube in yours most likely just finally wore out. It's the source of the microwaves, and like any tube it gets weaker with age and finally just quits altogether. It would cost more for a new magnetron than it would for a new oven these days.

Microwave doesn't heat anything

Sounds like the magnetron has failed. This is the component that produces the microwaves that heats the food.

The cost of the magnetron is about 95% of the cost of a microwave oven. Most people don't, for this reason, replace the magnetron, they replace the whole oven which is probably what you will end up doing.

There is a possibility that the circuit that provides power to the magnetron is faulty and you need to take it apart, find the proper electrical leads and test them with a volt meter. To do this you have to remove it from its mounting and take it apart. It is a fairly lengthy process however.

take the cover off the machine and look for a 13amp fuse that supplys the tranformers. BEWARE!!!
when you open the machine disconnect from the mains and do not touch the high power circuits the capacitors can hold a charge that can kill.
