The laser is dirty.
If you have a can of compressed air, open the DVD tray and spray into the unit for a couple of seconds. Use the can UPRIGHT, do not tilt the can, do not shake the can before using.
If you don't have an air can or the can trick didn't work:
Radio Shack has a DVD cleaner disc ($13).
It is an audio CD with a row of brushes on it.
Read the instructions carefully and turn ON your speakers or headphones.
No chemicals involved.
