First, change your batteries. Next, make sure that after you push both link buttons (try to press them as close to simultaneously as you can) that you click the mouse button. Otherwise it won't actually link.

SOURCE: Dell optical mouse quit working
I found the solution!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I had the same problem and I had an idea of what it was and sure enough i was right......Check your updates/installs from microsoft. Look for "Update for window Vista (KB938371)"....this update will disable your mouse! If its installed you cant uninstall it by going into control pannel and uninstalling it. The way I found to get rid of it if its installed is to do a "Restore Point". Restore to an earlier date. You may have to "restore" a day or two earlier from when it was installed. I tried a "restore point" on the same day but an hour earlier, didnt work...took me two days prior (restore) for my mouse to work again. Dont forget to turn off "automatic update" so as it doesnt install again and your back to this. Im going to spread the word as much as possible and contact Microsoft of this, hopefully they put out an update for this B.S. I went through a lot of research to figure this out and a lot of trial and error, please pass it along

Have you tried changing the port in which the USB wireless receiver is plugged?
Or is the receiver internal to the notebook?
If the receiver is internal, try updating the drivers for your machine by navigating to the manufacturer's support site.
If you plug a wired mouse into the machine what happens? If you get the same result, it may indicate a problem with the USB settings on your machine. I would, again, suggest updating the drivers for your machine.
If that's the case, try plugging another USB device into the machine and see if it works properly.
If none of those options provide results, I recommend you return the mouse for a refund or a replacement, especially if you have the receipt.
I hope I was able to help you. Good luck!
