Question about JBL PB12 Subwoofer

1 Answer

I purchased a JBL PB12 (120v) subwoofer from a friend. It worked excellent for a month or so, but completely went on the fritz yesterday. Whenever I turn it on, I get a loud whining noise, that starts high pitched, then goes low pitched (progressively) and then stops. Sounds kind of like a capacitor is dissapating through the sub. The sub for sure isn't blown, and I've already removed and replaced the fuse correctly. I don't have warranty, and now I don't have bass to my theatre system. Please, any help is appreciated, regards, Max

I already tested another woofer, and it made exactly the same noises. The High end outputs give out no signal, and I can't really narrow it down to a component, as visually, they all look good, otherwise, hard to narrow down.

It sounds like something on your main board of your amp is going out. It is most likely the finals, or as you said a capacitor. Test the port with another speaker, if al is well then the wooferis bad. if not you will have to go inside the amp for repair. Depending on the brand it can be a little complicated. Try and narror it down to the proper componet, post back the results and we will go from there. Also is this sound comming from all channels or just the woofer?

A wire inside the cable has probably come loose, unless you (or a friend) have decent soldering skills to just replace the wire form the audio controller (most likely spot to have problems) to the PC they are probably just trash.

Subwoofer will not power up

More likely to have shorted out Class D amplifier module that was badly designed.
Here are the service manuals:

Sounds like you've blown them.

More likely to be the Class D power amp module, but you should look through the service manual to make sure all the parts are installed correctly. My PB10 AMP module went out and you cannot get one anymore.

that is a compleately stretched voice coil my friend
only thing to do is take it to where you bought it for warantee
or purchase a sub that will be effiecient in the box you have
also there could be a chance that your impedence is not matched for the proper amplifier output
what is the resistance on your coil or coils
