Question about Dell Inspiron 700M Notebook

1 Answer

Dell Inspiron 700m won't start

I have a Dell Inspiron 700m that was working flawlessly until this weekend. While on vacation, I had it plugged in and all programs closed. I closed the lid which usually sends it into Standby, then Hibernate. I woke up the next morning and opened the lid to the "Blue Screen of Death" and something about a memory dump. I turned it off by holding the power button down, waited, then tried to turn it back on. All I got was a short beep, then 3 beeps, 4 beeps, and 3 beeps and a black screen. It shows the battery charging if plugged in and shows the power "ring" lit up green. But it's not doing ANYTHING. Any hints on what to do next to fix it? Thank you!!

    leecom72 (and others),

I received my 1gb RAM replacement card and removed the old/installed the new today. Still, same problem. 1 beep followed by 3 beeps, 4 beeps, 3 beeps and NOTHING on the screen. Ugh. Any other advice?

    Thanks again, leecom72.

I ended up FINDING my receipt for the computer and found that I had a little over 100d left on the warranty. I chatted with Dell last night & they're sending out a tech with a new motherboard, lcd, lcd plastics and memory. Let's hope that works.

Thanks again for all of your wisdom and help!

    Gary

Hi,
It sounds like there is an issue with the system memory.

Remove both the power adapter and the battery. Turn the laptop over and locate the RAM (memory) cover and remove the holding screw.
Take out the system memory and clean the brass contacts, also clean the slots that the memory sits in.
Re-seat the memory making sure it clips into place nice and tight and replace the RAM cover.

Return power to the laptop and turn it on to see if that has helped.

If it still won't boot up then you may need to purchase new memory for the laptop.

Good luck.

    Hi again,
OK, this now sounds serious beep code 3-4-3 is certainly a memory issue but it's to do with a failure finding video read only memory.

Removing and replacing the RAM usually can sort this problem out but unfortunately not in your case.

Try this to see if it works on your machine >>>>>

Remove the battery and the power supply. Hold down the on/off button for around 30 seconds. Plug in the AC power only and turn the machine on. Keep your fingers crossed on this one.
If you have to keep on repeating the process until the monitor displays.

I now recommend that you contact Dell because this is GPU (graphics processing unit) problem to do with nVidia graphics cards running too hot so communication between the video memory and the BIOS has failed.
Dell know about this issue so if it's still under warranty or you have extended the warranty the please take advantage of that because even if you get the laptop to display the problem will re-occur.

If you don't want to send your laptop to Dell then you will have no other choice but to take the laptop to a reputable PC repair shop and have them change the graphics card for a new one, or you can try to do it yourself.
If you decide to attempt to do it yourself post the full serial number (S/N) to me and I'll help you source a compatible graphics card for the laptop.

    Regards.
