Question about Zenith P50W38H 50 in. Plasma Television
After about 10 minutes the red and green pixels start to shimmer and the screen blinks every 15 seconds. The blinking increases to every second or so after a few more minutes. If I interrupt the video by opening the DVD tray the screen is fine for about another 10 minutes. It also had purple vertical bars which started weeks before the pixel and blinking problem.

Sorry to tell you, it is not a scratch, but a bad cable connection from the driver IC's, connecting up the plasma screen to the drive board, or the drive IC for that section of the screen is defective. It is not a repair a user can do as there are no user replaceable parts inside this set. Your going to have to call NEC or an experienced Plasma repair shop.

More than likely this is a bad display (lcd screen) the drivers in the lcd display are going out and unless its under warranty its very expensive to repair. Sorry :-(

SOURCE: lamp indicator blinks red
There is a problem with the lamp or around it? When it turns Orange, the lamp is at or near the end of it's life & needs replacing. What does the temperature indicator show? Orange, Red or Red Flashing? If not, then there is probably accumulated dust around lamp area

The buzzing is the ballast for the lamp trying to light the bulb. From what you've described it is a lamp failure. It's not that hard to change but you'll have to obtain a new lamp first. You can try and buy it from LG (800-243-0000) but I'm not sure if they'll sell to a consumer. Then you have to reset the lamp timer after you replace it. Hold the mute on the remote and the enter button on the tv at the same time for about 8 seconds and a screen will come up asking if you want to reset the timer. Just follow what it says to reset it.
