Turn off recorder. Hold the on/off button on the dvd player for a few seconds. until "CHILD LOCK" disappears. The child lock is now disengaged...Check page 37 in the manual (I found it online -- same thing happened to my player -- I just freed it)

I have had some problems with the same unit. My particular problems are posted under dutchtreet on a page on this site. I bought a compressed air duster like used on keyboards and tv screens. I have cleaned the lens on the laser pick up on my old Sony cd player (15+ yrs. old) several times and done some minor vcr repairs and simple electronics repairs so I was not intimidated! Much to my chagrin, there was a cover w/ a spidle above the lens on the dvd recorder! I could not get to it w/ a swab and some 99.6% alcohol on it so I opted to get to it with the air dusters nozzle as close to the lens as I could get without removing the cover/spindle. I probably used half the duster and blew from all angles possible. After reinstalling it, it will now play some dvd's it would not play since I began having problems. Also loads both cd's and dvd's much quicker. I know I have a dust problem in my A/V room so am now running my air cleaner 24/7. Am also wiping off all media I use in it before inserting. So hopefully with some routine maintenance I can keep it working ok. You can probably have the unit cleaned locally. How do you keep the drawer open while cleaning? Open the drawer amd then disconnect the power cord while it is open. I know from some rsearch that dvd recorders are must more sensitive and do not like dust!!!

sounds like your laser is getting weak. repair is usually not economical. laser is about 90% the cost of the unit. hope this helps if it still plays but not record. keep it as strictly playback unit.
