Yes you are correct, the problem is in the phone. Based on what you have stated, the problem has to do with the program. To resolve this issue, the firmware of the phone should be upgraded. However, only the manufacturer knows the best firmware that would work correctly with your phone.
Contact the manufacturer and I'm sure that the phone would work again after the firmware upgrade.

Tap on Start >> Settings >> Connections. Tap on Network Settings. Check the checkbox there and select your Operator from there if listed. It shall automatically configure y our device for Vodafone. In case your operator is not listed there, you need to get the manual network settings from Vodafone. To set the manual settings:
Click Start >> Settings, go to connections tab, tap on connections and click on Add new Modem connection, enter the name of connection as Vodafone, in the select a modem, select Cellular Line (GPRS) and tap Next. In the Access Point name type <the access point name as provided by Vodafone> and tap next. Leave everything blank in the next screen and ckick on Finish. Restart the phone and the settings would be saved.
