Question about Seagate (ST3100203U2-RK) (ST3100203U2RK) 100 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

Power supply Adaptor

Usually when the hard drive is running the adaptor seems to die and wont come back on till the adaptor is unplugged, sometimes when not plugged up to the hard drive it dies until unplugged, i want to know if this problem is fixable because i cannot afford a new adaptor for it yet. This has started happening today just a few days after the warranty ran out grrr.

Re: Power supply Adaptor

Just to be sure, is it the power supply that is faulty, or the harddrive 'case'?

If you have a separate power supply, you can find a new one for something like 15-20$

why pay for software?

Seagate external hard drive usb and power adaptor

any power adaptor would do it as long as the voltage is good (usually 12v) and amperes is the same or higher than what's written in your hard drive enclosure (usually 1Ampere = 1000mA) is good enough, some HDDs use up to 2000mA
Usb cable is very easy to find
you can find those at any electronic parts selling or ebay

By SEPARATE I am taking that to mean an external drive and not an internal mounted drive. If IT IS external the same power supply should work fine as the drive motors are the same in both models. IF IT IS Internal then the question is whether your power supply is molex or ATA.

No external drive icon on desk top

This happened to me as well - i have been reading that it could be the power supply adaptor. If you can try another one - it might solve the problem. The adaptors seem to either be faulty or made to stop working. Great news for us the consumer!!

Western Digital My Book Essentials will not power on (no light in front).

I FOUND THE SOLUTION. Here's what you must do. Unplug ALL the cables that are attached to the Western Digital Hard Drive. In other words PHYSICALLY disconnect the firewire/USB cable from BOTH the computer and the Western Digital Hard Drive.Do the same with the power adapter, unplugging it from the wall outlet as well as the Western Digital Hard drive. Now shut down your laptop or computer. Then plug EVERYTHING back in. Now re-start your laptop or computer. Everything should work fine and be back to normal. Good luck.
