Take the battery out and turn selection switch to camera and then turn it off. Put the battery back in and its working again.
if that doesn't work try
Try smacking the side of the camera relatively hard with the palm of your hand. Eject the tape and reinsert. You may need to do this a couple of times.

There is a tutorial for transferring video from tyhis camera to a computer on the Sony website. Unfortunately, you do not say what kind of computer (PC or Mac) or operating system you have, and you have to specify this on the website to get the right instructions.

The instructions for a Windows computer are as follows:

Movie player applications must support mpeg 2 playback to open these files properly. Refer to the software manufacturer for additional information and available updates.
  1. Turn on the computer.
  2. Make sure the camcorder is turned off.
  3. Connect the camcorder to the computer using the supplied USB cable.
  4. Plug the AC power adapter into an electrical wall outlet and then connect it to the camcorder.
  5. Open the LCD screen on the camcorder.
  6. Turn on the camcorder.
  7. The USB SELECT screen will be displayed on the LCD; touch the HDD icon.
  8. Open the My Computer window on the computer.
  9. In the My Computer window, double-click the icon that represents the camcorder and then navigate through the folder structure to locate the video you want to transfer. Note: The camcorder will be listed in the My Computer window as an additional hard drive.
  10. Click to select the video or image files you want to transfer. Note: If your are using a High Definition Handycam® Camcorder, Sony recommends copying and pasting the AVCHD folder to the hard drive of the computer before accessing its contents.
  11. Type CTRL+C to copy the files.
  12. Click on the computer folder to which you want to copy the video or still image files.
  13. Type CTRL+V to paste the file into the computer folder.

Error C:04:00

  1. Turn off the camcorder.
  2. Remove the battery or disconnect the AC power adapter for 60 seconds.
  3. Insert the battery or reconnect the AC adapter.
  4. Turn on the camcorder.
  5. If the error message appears, service may be required.
If your camcorder still shows the same error code, then you'll have to send in your camcorder for service.

No power from batteries and the camcorder will

I have the same problem. The battery is charged, but the camcorder will only work while plugged in. It worked for a while on the 1st day, Christmas, then it would only turn on while plugged into the charger and would stay on after charger was disconnected. Today it will only stay on if plugged into charger.

First: put your battery in your friends camcorder and use ur friends charger to charge the battery.
Then put your battery back into your camcorder to see if it works.

If the battery works then this eliminates the battery as a problem.

Next plug your charger into your friends camcorder to see if it will power the camcorder without battery, if this works then the problem will most likley be the connector in your camcorder.

If this does not work then the problem will be the plug or the charger.

Next plug your friends charger into your camcorder if it does not work this will verify that the problem is the connector on your camcorder

Lost the charger of my sony dvd201 cam corder. is there any other way i can charge my camcorder?so i dnt have to buy a new charger? and do i need power to open the camcorder disc door?

Hello. Yes, you do need power to open the disc door. When you slide the disc cover open switch, you should hear the little musical sound, and then the "preparing to open cover" appears in the lcd display. Then the door opens automatically. As for charging the corder, you can get a new ac charger for 25 bucks on Ebay. Sony uses a special plug that is inserted. If you want to go the cheaper route, I saw mobile *battery* chargers for your unit(not to be used as camcorder power supplies) as inexpensive as 8 bucks...most were 10 dollars and up...the input voltage/current to the cam is 12v @ 500ma. However, the fact that the connector isn't the generic "cylinder" shaped power connector makes purchasing a compatable power source a necessity. ---Rick

Just FYI, www.silentwitness.com has Sony modify the camcorders for use in mobile applications so they don't shutdown. I have no cure for this, but I do know the stock models are programmed to do this to prevent overheating. It has to do a lot with the warranty. i.e. you have a one year warranty. The unit can't (without modifications) run 24x7. Said modification almost triples the price of the camera.
