It started freezing initially but has now developed the 3 red quadrants i.e. ring of death.

I have investigated and it seems to be an overheating problem. Do I wrap it in towels or do I have to take it apart??

What type of ring? 1 quadrant? 3?

If it's NOT the 3 ROL (aka the "red lights of death" which usually means something wrong with the console's motherboard), it maybe something as simple as a loose video connection. Take apart EVERYTHING (including the harddrive).

If it still freezes after the reconnection, first try performing disk drive maintenance, which is located in the memory section of the options menu (goto my xbox and press right on the analog stick until you reach SYSTEM SETTINGS). Once you've done the disk maintenance/cache clear try playing some more to see if it freezes again.

If it is STILL freezing try playing it w/o the harddrive. Not all games can work w/o the harddrive, but if you can verify that it's the harddrive causing this then you know it's the HD and not the console it self.

That's all I have. Hope this helps,

No. Don't wrap it in towels! There is a 3 year (I think it's 3 years now) limited warranty on the Xbox 360 now, which covers the 3 Rol issue. Call up Microsoft and get it repaired! How old is your Xbox 360?

So, the idea behind the towell trick is to induce so much heat that it "reflows" the solder connections on the CPU (which is the root cause behind most of the 3 Rol problems... solder line breaks). Problem is you are getting that console so dang hot that it could mess something else up too. Same thing with baking console in ovens or what ever crazy ideas you've seen on Youtube. Get it fixed through Microsoft.

    Hope this helps,

No prob, bud. Another thing, if you have an older system they had the older (bigger/hotter) CPU which tended to overheat more. They have replaced this CPU with the "Jasper" chipset, which is either 60 or 45 nM diepitch. Smaller processor = less current to run = less heat. Long story short, if you are ever in the market for a new 360, make sure it is a never system. I believe all the Xbox arcades (with the HDMI port) carry the Jasper chipset.

    Hope this helps,

This happens because the GPU and the CPU are overheating and as it overheats the motherboard starts to bend ever so slightly.

Once the soldering looses connection you get this error.

To fix it you need to send it in or repair it yourself.

Hope this helps!

How to reset your playstation 3

If you are having issues with your Playstation 3 where it's locking up or freezing, you might need to reset the unit.

You can preform a reset by holding down the Power button for about 10 seconds. The power light should turn red, then you can let go of the button.

Your PS3 has been reset, try to power on the unit normally to see if your problems persists.

i hope i could help you, if not please let me know.

Picture freeze and pinstrip on the screen

When a Microsoft Xbox 360 console experiences a "general hardware" failure or "core digital" failure, three flashing red lights appear (known as the "Red Ring of Death") around the power button, in lieu of the four green lights indicating normal operation. Warning signs may include freeze-ups, in which the screen has strange, spontaneous graphical problems in the middle of gameplay, such as checkerboard or pinstripe patterns on the screen, the sound is frozen and changed to a strange, static-like sound, and the console only responds to pressing the power button to turn it off. These events may happen once or several times until the general hardware failure occurs, when the user attempts to turn the console on, and the three red lights are seen and the console will not function.

this sounds like it will error e74 which will need a reflow
but dont overheat with a towel as this will cause more problems

Hi my playstation keeps freezing and everytime i follow the instructions on the playstation it freezes again. it now wont start correctly. Could you help me please ?

your PS3 is freezing simply because your console is affected by heat, so you have to cool it down. If the freezing continues even after cooling down, you can follow the steps below:

To stop the PS3 from Freezing, you could begin by putting off your console and wait for 20 minutes. After that, put it back on. Check if there's any loose cables. If there is, put them back in.

If the problem still persist, try the below steps,

1. Turn off Playstation®3.
2. Hold the power button down; the system will turn on and turn off once again.
3. Once the System has been shutdown, re-press you finger until you hear 2 consecutive beeps
4. When you hear the 2 beeps take finger off power button.
5. You will be prompted to plug in your controller via USB and then hit the PS button
6. The Recovery menu will pop up.

The current Recovery Menu supports:
• Restart System: Restarts the PLAYSTATION®3 System.
• Restore Default Settings: Reset all system settings back to default.
• Restore File System: Checks for corrupt/missing system files.
• Rebuild Database: Rebuilds the OS for the PLAYSTATION®3.
• Restore PS3 System: Fresh restore; Deletes everything and starts from Scratch.
• System Update: Update the PLAYSTATION®3 System.

Take care.

How do you fix the screen from freezing up on xbox 360?

Yes the freezing up normally happens before the red lights, the reason that it happens is the CPU and the CPU that deal with the main graphics on your system have overheated and it has caused the motherboard to flex slightly.

When this happens they lose connection and you get a freeze.

Stop the heat and the motherboard from flexing and you will be back up and running, to do this you can use a good guide or you can send it in.

The graphics processor, and second graphics chip both require a reflow. A special BGA reflow 'heat' machine is required.
