Look at the symbol on your dvd drive tray. If it states DVD Multi Drive/recorder then you can use DVD + R, DVD - R, DVD +RW, DVD-RW, DVD-RAM and CD-R, CD-RW discs.
most pcs/laptops have these drives. Only camcorders are very speicfic for which you should look at the symbol or the manual to determine disc type.

Any DVD will work. DVD+r or -R. it is a matter of what you intend to use it for. for movies use -R because most older players support that. if its a new player then it will support the +R. for data it doesn't matter.

How to create a bootable Windows USB drive. A common use of a bootable USB flash drive is to use it to boot into Windows. Booting from removable media such as a USB drive allows you to perform diagnostics on a computer that is having trouble booting from the hard drive. You can also use the flash drive to install Windows, instead of using the Windows installation CD.
This guide will outline making a bootable USB flash drive with Windows XP, Vista, or 7. Before we begin, it is important to note that the computer you want to use your bootable USB drive must be able to use a USB drive as a boot device. Most computers built since Windows Vista was released are capable of booting to a USB device. Prior to the Windows Vista time frame, it is hit or miss with motherboards.

To determine if a computer is capable of booting to a USB device, access the computer's BIOS and check the bootable device list. If a USB device is listed, set the USB drive to be the first boot device. If you do not see a USB device in the list of bootable devices, your BIOS is not capable of booting to a USB device.
Note: You may need to have your USB flash drive plugged in when you access the BIOS).

Windows Vista and Windows 7 users To make a bootable USB drive for Windows Vista or Windows 7, you need to have Windows Vista or 7 installed on your computer. It is recommended that you have a flash drive of at least 4 GB in size, to store all the necessary files.
Tip: Before you start, plug in the USB drive and backup any files you have stored on the USB drive. The drive will be formatted during this process and all files on it will be deleted.
Note: You need to have a Windows Vista or Windows 7 DVD for these instructions to be successful.
1. Open an elevated Windows command line window by clicking Start, typing in cmd in the search text field, then pressing CTRL + Shift + Enter on your keyboard (at the same time). You can also access this by navigating to Start, All Programs, Accessories, right-click with your mouse on the Command Prompt menu item and select Run as Administrator.
2. At the command prompt, type cd c:\windows\system32 to change the directory to the Windows system32 directory. Ensure your USB drive is plugged in, type DISKPART, then press Enter. Type LIST DISK and press Enter.

3. You will see a listing of the disk drives connected to your computer. Find the disk number of your USB drive and type SELECT DISK [USB disk #], where "[USB disk #]" is the disk # for your USB drive. It should now state that your USB drive is the selected disk. If you're not sure what disk is the USB disk, eject the USB drive, perform step number 2 again, connect the USB drive again, and compare the results. Usually the USB drive will be the last drive.
4. Type in the following commands, one by one, pressing Enter after each command.
CLEAN

CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY

SELECT PARTITION 1

ACTIVE

FORMAT FS=NTFS
(may take a couple minutes, depending on the USB drive size)

ASSIGN

EXIT
Keep the command prompt window open, but you can minimize it for a little bit.
5. You will now need your Windows Vista or 7 Installation DVD. Put the DVD in your computer's DVD drive. Open up My Computer and note which drive letter is assigned to your DVD Drive and your USB flash drive.
6. Go back to the command prompt window and type in D: CD BOOT (substitute your DVD drive letter for "D:", if necessary) and press Enter. Type CD BOOT again and press Enter. Lastly, type BOOTSECT.EXE /NT60 H: (substitute your USB flash drive letter for "H:", if necessary) and press Enter.
7. The last step is to copy the entire contents of the Windows DVD to your USB flash drive. To do this, in the My Computer window (opened in step 5 above), right-click on the DVD drive and select Open to view the contents of the DVD. Copy all the files and folders on the DVD to the USB flash drive.
Your USB flash drive is now set up to be a bootable USB drive for Windows Vista or 7.
How to or can boot from CD or DVD

Good luck.

Tip

How to Install windows 7 by using usb flash drive, pen driver or usb harddisk.

Hi,

Friends i have seen thousand of laptop cd/dvd rom stops working very soon. then the quesion is how you do intall your os if it was corrupted.
follow my tip and install windows7 or vista in very simple way.

a) first insert your usb flash drive or hdd in usb port
b) then open commandprompt from accessories with rightclick run as administrator
c) you must know what is drive letter of your usb flash drive.
d) type DISKPART in command prompt and press enter
e) then type LISTDISK in command prompt
f) Next type all the below commands one by one. Here I assume that your disk drive no is “Disk 1”.If you have Disk 2 as your USB flash drive then use Disk 2.Refer the above step to confirm it.

So below are the commands you need to type and execute one by one:

SELECT DISK 1

CLEAN

CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY

SELECT PARTITION 1

ACTIVE

FORMAT FS=NTFS

(Format process may take few seconds)

ASSIGN

EXIT

g) Next insert your Windows7/Vista DVD into the optical drive and check the drive letter of the DVD drive. In this guide I will assume that your DVD drive letter is “D” and USB drive letter is “H” (open my computer to know about it).

h) Maximize the minimized Command Prompt in the 4th step.Type the following command now:

D: CD BOOT and hit enter.Where “D” is your DVD drive letter.

CD BOOT and hit enter to see the below message.

i) Type another command given below to update the USB drive with BOOTMGR compatible code.

BOOTSECT.EXE /NT60 H:
J) Copy your Windows 7/Vista DVD contents to the USB flash drive.

Eject the usb drive and select first boot device usb drive or usb hdd in motherboards bios.

enjoy... and please rate this trick.

Dvd rom reading cds not dvds

Not uncommon issue with ALL DVD drives, it is often a failure in the DVD circuitry of the drive and will require that the drive be replaced entirely. There is no fix or repair for this type of issue.

PS. When problems occur with optical media, it never hurts to run a CD/DVD clearer disk through the drive. These disks have physical bristles (brushes) embedded on the data side of the disk that will dust of the laser lens.

Dvd not working playstation 3

Hey Christine,
There are a couple steps you can take to troubleshoot this. You want to determine if the problem is with your DVD or with the actual cd/dvd/blue-ray drive in the PS3.
1. Make sure that the DVD works in other DVD players. It helps to try in both stand-alone DVD players and in your computer. a. Some DVDs (especially DVD-RW or rewritable DVDs) dont work on certain players. If it is a rewritable DVD it may need to be formatted by the device that created it for use. Your computer may also be able to tell if there are problems with the data on the DVD
2. Try other disks in the PS3 to make sure they work. Try Other DVDs and games or Blue-ray disks to make sure that your console's drive hasn't been damaged or is defective in any way. If other disks do work the problem is with the DVD. If no type of disk (including Blue-Ray and Game) dont work, the issue is with your drive.
a. If this is the case, you might try soft-resetting the PS3 by holding the front power button for about 10 seconds.
b. You might also want to make sure your PS# has been updated to support the latest updates by logging onto the playstation network where it will automatically prompt you if you need to update.
Let me know what you find after you complete these steps and you still have the issue.

You need to determine what version DVD-ROM drive your unit has and then you will be able to either purchase one from ebay, otherwise i imagine a repair shop or Microsoft may charge up to the cost of $200, but that is a large ball park figure, If you are interested, i can email you a guide to determine what Style of DVD-ROM drive you have so you know what type you need to order.

Hi guys I found out why the disk wont read in my system anyway

Interesting. Not all Xbox 360s use the same type DVD drive. There are at least 3 different brands - Benq, Samsung, and Hatachi. There are various ways of determining this, besides opening the Xbox 360. Based on the drive type, there are different versions of firmware(the software on the drive that communicates with the Xbox 360). Some firmware modifications Microsoft doesn't want consumers to know because it allows the playing of cloned dvds.

When I put in a disc, it is showing no disc

Make sure you have the correct disk. There are different types for example dvd-r or dvd+r or dvd-rw or dvd+rw etc. Look in your manual to determine which is correct for your camera. And, make sure the disk you put in is new and was not used before as a dvd-r or dvd+r can only be used one time.

DVD player won't read dvd-r. what can I do?

If you have determined that the problem is not the DVD-R disk (runs in other DVD players), try running a CD/DVD cleaner. If that doesn't solve, it's probably a hardware issue.
