Question about Arris SURFboard SB5101 Cable Modem

1 Answer

Keep getting cannot connect to primary dns server

I go online to either surf the internet or play online and it will work fine for 10 to 15 minutes then i get disconnected and unable to access the internet and receive cannot communicate with primary dns server. It will work again once I "powercycle" the modem but again for only 10 to 15 minutes. I have contacted my isp and they have not noticed a problem with the modem. I ended up reformatting my entire pc and the problem persists. I have a hp pavilion slimline s3400f with motorola sb5101 modem. I am unsure of how to proceed

You need to call the cable company tell them your ip lease is cycling every 15 minutes, it is a node conflict, they can fix it on their end. if the cable modem is a hacked one, then you just need to clone a new MAC yours is not valid anymore. if not a hacked one, call tech support. good luck!

How do I configure my laptops IP address to my router to get online? I'm using windows vista. I tried a few times and I can't find the window to type in the laptops IP address. How?

Follow the following steps to change your TCP and IP Settings on Windows Vista

1. Go to the Control Panel from the Start menu.
2. Click "Network and Internet" and then "Network and Sharing Center."
3. Click "Manage network connections."
4. Choose which Internet connection you would like to change if you have more than one. Right click on it and select "Properties."
5. Click the "Networking" tab.
6. Choose Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)
(Note that "Obtain an IP Address Automatically" works fine generally)
7. Click "Use the following IP Address" to enter your own IP settings.
- Enter IP address (eg. 192.168.1.125) into the box marked "IP Address, press tab "Subnet Mask" would appear automatically (255.255.255.0) and in "Default gateway." type 192.168.0.1.

To specify DNS server address settings, do one of the following:

- To obtain a DNS server address automatically, click Obtain DNS server address automatically, and then click OK.
- To specify a DNS server address, click Use the following DNS server addresses, and then, in the Preferred DNS server and Alternate DNS server boxes, type the addresses of the primary and secondary DNS servers.(which can be obtained from your internet service provider (ISP).

What is the primary DNS and secondary DNS?

There are two basic types of DNS - primary DNS and secondary DNS, which are generally applied to each newly registered domain. They are name server computers where the record of your domain name is stored. The information on both servers is identical. The two DNS values are usually configured by your ISPor hosting provider and given to you as a very important part of your domain registration order details.

In general, domain names can work with only one name server - the primary DNS. However, practice has shown that a domain name needs to have at least two name servers assigned in order to be available at any time. In case there is a problem with the primary name server, the secondary name server will be able to answer the online request for a particular domain. This back-up requirement has turned into an accepted Internet standard that prevents domain names from going offline.

My problem started a week ago today. I was experiencing slow internet speeds and used the "diagnose & repair" feature. It said "problem communicating with primary DNS server. Pinged host but did not...

Some ISP require that you use there DNS servers and automatically assign these settings. Here is a great article utilizing OPENDNS Servers that will allow you to troubleshoot your problem. I have found that by following their instructions it has saved me alot of slow web surfing.

I cannot communicate with primary dns server 172.29.71.1 is there a way i can reset it automaticaly or manually

You cam try doing a power cycle. Turn off the modem, router (if you have one) and your computer. after 1 minute turn on modem first then router and computer. If you still can't communicate or ping the DNS it could be a firewall that is blocking it.

Playing on line

The way this was resolved for me (and I know someone else mentioned it in an other post here), was to enter the DNS server addresses manually in the PS3 network settings AND use tetertiary DNS server from my ISP as either the primary or the secondary DNS server. Voila... I am upgrading my PS3 software as I write this.... ..btw, this also fixed the similar problem I had with my PSP..

My ps3 will not connect to my wireless internet

Try setting a static ip address on the PS3:-

First you need to find a Windows wired or wireless device already connected to the network in order to find out the required settings

Windows XP
1. Click start --> (sometimes settings) --> Control Panel --> Network Connections
2. Double click on the active connection which will say connected underneath
3. Click Support
4. Click Details
5. Now the IP Address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, Primary DNS and Alternate DNS which are displayed should be noted.

Windows Vista
1. Click Start --> Control Panel --> Network and Sharing Center
2. Click on "View Status" to the right of your connection
4. Click Details
5. Now the IP Address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, Primary DNS and Alternate DNS which are displayed should be noted.

Set these values under "manual settings" in the PS3 but add 1 to the last number for the IP Address as this has to be unique on your network
