Question about Panasonic PT-61HX40 61" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

I have a panasonic PT61HX40B and it keeps going black. It still has sound but no picture. The bottom of the tubes/projectors are orange so they are powered but nothing coming out of the top of projectors. If i let it run for a bit it will come back on but then does the same thing again. I checked for burned or damaged circuit. But only found that the TNPA1412 board is the only thing that looks like it might have got hot its discolored.I cleaned it all out inside and checked every connection and they all seem good. What is it?

This is going to be one of two things on this. Either your cable going into this is bad or one of your display boards went bad. Replace the cable you have going into the projector first. They go bad all the time.

It sounds like the picture tube may be weak (because it's orange) but it going to half ascreen is not caused by the picture tube but likely a vertical circuit problem. If this problem happened suddenly (going orange) then the picture tube is probably good and at least worth bringing in for an estimate.

I have a samsung that the screen was pink now, black with sound??

What you describe is a classic symptom of burned out fluorescent tubes in the display. I'm assuming this tv is a LCD model...Unseen by the user, there are long, thin, extremely bright, fluorescent tubes along the edges(usually top and bottom) which light up a backscreen so you have a vivid image to look at. (sort of like how a doctor views xray pictures) As the tubes age, they change color and eventually burn out. An excellent example of the same technology is a laptop display or desktop lcd display--same exact design. Hopefully your unit is under warranty because this is an involved repair *if* it can be done. Most often, the whole lcd display unit must be replaced. Definitely shop around for repair facilities if non-warranty is a factor.

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.

I've posted this solution several times but here goes. Try setting up the convergence through the menu by accessing the convergence setup menu. If this fails to work you have a bad digital convergence box and need a tech to replace it. About $60 to $100 fix.
