Boot up problem

When i boot up it kept going through the same process over and over were it was saying computer wasnt shutdown properly then saying booting from last known config. When i put the recovery disk in and reformated the hardrive it all seemed to be good until and restarted the laptop. It would then start the same cycle again.

when in safe mode works fine, If i boot up as normal it displays toshiba thenwindows xp screens. Then it comes up with in proper shut down and then counts down from 30 secs then loads from last known good config. Sometimes it will al;ternate from a black screen and then back to windows xp screen then finally going onto the desktop screen. Sometimes it will go in a cycle were it does this numerous times and then freeze with a black screen.

Disable auto shutdown

Restart the Computer and keep tapping the F8 key till you see the advance boot options, You should be tapping the key as soon as you see the manufactures screen. Once you get the advance boot options -> Select the option which says Disable Automatic Startup on System Failure.

My computer is on but no picture. It says windows was not shut down properly

Hello Pattiaknight,Make a desktop shortcut to shutdown and include a switch that forces all open apps to shut down without warning.

Just right click the desktop, New, Shortcut, type:

Shutdown -f

Shutdown -f closes any open programs without warning.

Now instead of shutting down the usual way, just use that shortcut to shutdown. If the error stops it means some program wasnt shutting down properly on occasion.

Please let me know if you any further questions or concerns. Also please rate it if you like the answer,it helps alot.
Thanks.

I have a Acer 5517 64bit windows 7 laptop. Just recently I updated my memory cards from two gig to four gig. Now the laptop will not shut down properly. I replaced the old memory cards, and it's still...

Try UPDATING the BIOS firmware first by going on the Acer web site, go to support than download than enter the laptop model...

Download the corresponding BIOS firmware (if they have an .ISO file) than burn it to a CD using NERO so that the CD is BOOTABLE, than BOOT with the CD and fallow the instructions

Hope this helped!

this is happening when windows BOOT sector is damaged..and you need to either reinstall the operation system ..or use the recovery partition or cd to do that ...
If you have a windows Boot-able cd ..just insert ..choose repair ...and when it asks for command choose 1 for the first 0drive /C:/windows..and the command is FIXBOOT ..after that type exit ..and yes..and will do ...if you find it hard to work with it in DOS..just reinstall it ..and will be fine..

System won't complete the RESTART process

Do a check disk (chkdsk) using either:

1) Go to My Computer > right click on the drive with windows that won't boot > click properties > go to tools tab > click error checking > tick both boxes and click check now > it will say windows needs to restart, allow it too.

OR

2) Boot up using the installation disk... I will need the OS version (XP, Vista etc.) to tell you how to do that.

Error Occurs

I'm going to ask a stupid question. After you run the recovery and the machine reboots, are you getting a prompt to "press and key to boot from CD"?

If so, don't press a key and see if Windows (recovered) will boot.

If not, I'd say you probably need to re-run the recovery and choose a clean Windows install ...or at a minimum, a repair.

Hope this helps - please remember to rate :)

Flashing Lights when powered down

The flashing LED is because your system is in "sleep" mode. By default windows Vista puts your computer in sleep. What this means is it doesn't shutdown the power completely it leaves a little going through certain computer components (more specifically the ram) to speed up the boot time when the power button is pressed again.

In XP a the default shutdown scheme is a complete shutdown where power is turned off after the shutdown process is done. If you are using XP you are putting your computer to sleep when shutting down.

As for the boot problem. Newer motherboards have an LED on the actual board to indicate that it is receiving power. If it is of either the power supply switch (at the back of the case) if off or the motherboard connection is loose and the shaking makes it fall into place. (Shaking is usually not necessary and indicates a problem...)

There are a few possibilities I can deduct from your description:
  • the connection from your power supply to your motherboard isn't properly seated and is causing this
  • the power supply switch (not the case switch) is being  turned off and results in the computer taking a few seconds before the internal LED become solid
  • ... the dreaded sign that the power supply is failing and is on it's last legs...
My suggestion is to check all connections and if that doesn't work borrow a power supply from a friend and swap them to see if it boots properly.

(If a friends with a spare power supply isn't an option a local PC repair shop should be able to help you out... but probably for a fee...)

Sony Vaio VGC-RB576 motherboard fried

if you have problems with outages and surges, then the only way to protect electrical goods is by purchasing a surge protection socket extension. But you should check that your power options in control panel are set that on the shutdown drop down list the pc lists shut down and does not say restart. Also go into bios F2 or Del on boot up and look and see if time and date are correct, if not then the cmos battery needs changing (Cr2032 disc chaped on motheroard) then in advanced cmos settings, then look for 'ACPI', make sure this is enabled so as to support windows shutdown settings, then save settings and exit for a reboot.
