First, some clarity:

What do you mean by "flash bulb has gone"? Is the internal flash not working any more?

What do you mean by "onboard flash won't catch"? Do you mean that the internal (pop-up) flash doesn't work?

Is it possible that you have the flash turned off completely?

DSLR D90 Built in Flash Will not Stay down..

I know this late but for anyone else who's had this problem. I just fixed the flash on my camera by using a really small1.2mm flathead screwdriver. The problem is that the mechanism that's supposed to catch the hook has gotten off center. Just stick the screwdriver into the little hole on the left side of the flash (right side when looking at it) and then as you turn it you should be able to see the object that's supposed to be catching the hook. Make sure that object is in the correct position and your camera should work again. Hope this helps!!!

Those Xenon flash tubes last for a long time. You likely need a new flash PCB (printed circuit board). Typically, the trigger coil is at fault when you get the ready light but no flash

My camera c633 takes photos but flash wont work????even with new batt???

It is eathe the bulb or the flash circuit. if you are going to fix it yourself watch out for the flash compasitor. If you are going to send it in watch the cost. It sould be fairly cheap to have fixed.

Flash: PCB Replacement v. New Bulb!?

I had the same issue. The flash is set to go off, the camera assumes it went off, (as the record metadata shows) but it doen't go off at all, and the piture is underexposed.

I bought the 100 page repair manual, which is ONLY a dissassemble/reassemble manual with NO diagnostics. (Got it on ebay) So I was atleast able to get to the capacitor and flash bulb. I saw 300V across the capacitor leads, and the same 300Volts across the flash bulb leads. SO I am assuming that there is a transistor or relay that drops to ground to fire the flash that isn't working, or the electronic signal to drive that isn't working.

It seems most people replace the entire flash circuit board(which is near the capacitor under the left hand side). But it seems Nikon only sells parts to it certified repair facilities.

Ugh.... Looks like I'm buying a SB-600, as this is the cheepest solution. Too bad, because the on-board flash is more than decent. I hope the SB-600 thrills me enough to change my mood. :)

Canon EOS Rebel Ti

you mean the flash is not opening or coming out of its enclosure? if its not opening up, its stucked! try inserting a small plastic card into the flash compartment. a hook is holding the flash from coming up like a door lock. its near the shutter button side; if its up and not flashing take a look at the bulb, if theres a change in color its dead already. dead bulb can be checked by shooting on autmode (the green mode), dead bulb will gonna shoot but flash wont go, if the flash circuitry is bad it wont shoot no matter what.
