Computer turns itself off

Acer Aspire E700, running vista, just turns itself off without warning - was happening when the hard drive was full, but I now have 104GB free of 234 and it still does it?

Your fan speeds up and slows down in response to temperature inside the computer. More so the CPU.

I would suggest getting a can of compressed air made for computers

take it outside, take of the side and blow all the gunk out of there, Really go to town around the fan (you might want to wear eye protection)
While you are in there just check that the CPU cooler itself is not loose

If it is it will have to be re-seated.

If it needs re-seating don't just take it off and put it back on as that might make things worse with your temperature problem they have to be cleaned and new thermal grease put on ($2-5)

DON'T remove the CPU just the fan/cooler assembly.

You must clean both the surfaces without scraping anything off. Use isopropynol alcohol and cotton bud sticks until both surfaces are clean, you can use your finger nail to scrape harder residue if you wish but nothing else.

DON'T pour the alcohol over the CPU

Now apply some new thermal grease (most computer shops have it)

Be careful about how much you put on

Here are
some basic instructions

Once you have re-assembled your cooler and re-connected it check everything is OK and power up the computer.

If everything went to plan you should now be back in business

This can be caused due the Computer's software. So according to you that when the Computer got off then the Hard Drive was. Here lies the point. When the Hard Drive was full then the Computer must have experienced a Greater load and as for it the Hard Drive of the Computer crashed. Now you can't turn on the Computer because the whole Hard Drive is now dead and crashed. It can only be fixed by Changing the whole Hard Drive.
Thank you, Have a nice day.

This is probably due to a failing power supply.

Hi,

This is what you should do sir, back up your files and format your hard drive. Install back your programs and get an active anti virus for your computer. Run a comprehensive scan.

Then you are up for a go.

Kind Regards

The two most likely solutions that I can think of would be to

A) make sure that the power cord is inserted all of the way and not loose.
and
B) if option A is good, then I would back up my important files to CD/DVD, format the hard drive and reinstall windows. It can take some time, but your computer will run lots smoother if you do this once or twice a year.

This message means that the computer cannot see the hard drive. Unofrtunately, this is usually caused by a failed Hard Disk drive. However, you could try removing and re-fitting the hard drive to see if this cures the problem.

Full instructions on removing and replacing the hard drive can be found here:

The system disc probably did not come with the computer. You could burn one if the computer is functioning correctly. However, you may consider getting a full version of Windows 7 32 bit and trying to install it through the DVD drive.

You'll have to set the BIOS to boot from the DVD drive once you have the install DVD from Microsoft.

Luckily, Windows 7 can be used on many computers that came with Vista or XP originally, without upgrading the hardware.

The Windows 7 operating system costs about $119.99 depending on where you get it.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/compare/home-premium.aspx

This operating system can breath new life into your old laptop, which otherwise may require replacing.

If the hard disk drive actually crashed and is not recoverable, you may have to replace that hardware part, but hard drives aren't too expensive these days.

Good luck on this repair.

At this point I would suggest to try a full system restore as the sytem files might be corrupted. You can restore the computer back to factory default,to do so, follow the below steps:

Turn Off the computer, now as soon as you hit the power button, keep on holding "Alt" key & keep on tapping "F10" key, i.e Alt+f10, it will open the recovery console, select full factory restore and follow onscreen instruction. NOTE: This will erase all the datas on the computer.

It is displays fine up unto the point where Vista loads, then it must only happen when Vista loads the display driver. I would go with your initial assumption and reinstall the display driver.

You may be correct about the hard drive failure.
But to make sure that it is the hard drive and not Vista, I would try to run the recovery cd that came with the unit. When the cd boots up, select "repair" and let it attempt to fix the problem. If the recovery fails, I would call the warranty Company for service.

MY VISTA WINDOWS WONT LOAD

Okay, I think I can help you but I need some more information. I'm assuming your Acer laptop currently has a version of Windows XP installed, yes? And Acer gave you a CD to upgrade your OS to a version of Windows Vista?

And when you mean that you go to your BIOS to access the CD, I'm assuming that you are talking about the boot options menu (selecting the cd drive vs the hard drive or floppy drive or what not) correct?

When you select the CD drive to boot from, what exactly happens? Do you get any error message? Does the computer turn off? Does it appear to try to load from the CD and then switch to your hard drive instead (and load your existing operating system)?
