Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

There is ice forming on the entire rear wall of the cooling compartment of my one year old Liebherr comfort refidgerator Model IKS 1524 20D. Items near the back of the fridge are freezing as a result. The temperature setting is only just enough to bring the interior light on, so its virtually at its lowest setting.

  1. Determine the temperature setting. The refrigerator should be set to temperatures ranging from 34 degrees to 40 degrees, while the freezer should be below 30 degrees. Adjust the temperature setting which will naturally improve the ice build up that's been caused by the wrong temperature setting.
  2. Step 2 Move the refrigerator away from the wall. Oftentimes, this simple action is all that is needed because the unit is not getting enough air circulation behind it. Also, some refrigerators have vents underneath the unit, which are easily clogged with debris. Clean these vents and coils.
  3. Step 3 Remove food and shelving from the refrigerator and freezer portions of the fridge. If ice build up is happening in the freezer, the drain in the freezer may be clogged. With the unit off, remove coverings to expose drain and pour hot water down the drain hole until it comes out into the drain drip pan under the fridge.
  4. Step 4 Check the condenser coils. The evaporator coils could be causing the problem of ice build up. If this is the case, professional repair is likely needed to replace the motor, thermostat or other problems within the fridge. A handy person can make many of these repairs with experience by purchasing the parts they need online.
  5. Step 5 Call a repair technician to come to the home to check the unit for problems. It can be helpful to have a professional determine the source of the problem, but then to do the work yourself by refusing their service. Order the parts and make the required repairs.

Ice formation at back of unit is a sign self of defroster mechanism malfunction. If the ice in rear is primarily at the beginning of the gas line going to the evaporator then there is low gas in system.

Have the fridge pulled out and check behind it. I had same model and it was leaking into my walls/floor and caused thousands of dollars in damage to my kitchen. BLACK MOLS Covered my walls/cabinets and made me sick. Please be very careful with this excess water coming from this model. GE should recall it but will not unless forced. Not Cool.

One reason for the fan running is that it is trying to distribute the air in the compartment. Look at the very rear of the freezer on the bottom and see if the little vents, which allow water to disperse, are not filled with frozen ice. If so, turn off the fridge (unplug it) and use a hair dryer to melt that ice until it is all gone. That will probably fill the condensation pan under the unit and you'll need to empty it.
