If a motherboard supports 400 mhz's in the first DIMM slot and 333 mhz in the second, can i just use a 333 mhz ddr card in the second slot for the motherboard to power on and remain on with everything connected properly. Or would I need the 400 mhz? It does not need both but I am rebuilding an old computer and bought a newer mobo.

You can use either dimms itll just run at the slower speed of 333mhz as long as its the same type ddr ddr2 etc ...never quite seen one with 2 different speeds like that though i think you are confusing dimm speeds with frontside bus speeds here

Testimonial: "thank you very much. I got an answer from my instructor today. He said either one will support it. thanks again."

Hi, the mainboards homepage is here:

http://ee.gigabyte.com/products/page/mb/7nf-rz/

Your mainboard supports:

DDR 1, 333 / 266 mhz 184pin 3 x DIMM slots up to 3GB

The mhz is not so important
it can easy run with 400 mhz
if the cpu supports it.

    Info from the manual:

    Memory configurations

You can install 128 MB, 256 MB, 512 MB, and 1GB DDR SDRAM DIMMs into the DIMM sockets using the memory configurations in this section.

    • Install only identical (the same type and size) DDR DIMM pairs

    using the recommended configurations.

    • Make sure that the memory frequency matches the CPU FSB

(Front Side Bus). Refer to the Memory frequency/CPU FSB

synchronization table on the next page.

    • This motherboard does not support double-sided 16-bit DDR DIMMs.

    • Do not create a three-DIMM configuration in dual-channel mode. The
third DIMM is ignored in the dual-channel operation.

    Memory upgarade

Yes, it will work. Remember that all memory will operate at the speed of the slowest memory though so unless you're completely replacing the memory it won't increase the speed of the memory.
