Installing OS 10.5 on Powerbook 17 1.67 ghz using a double layer external drive.
I suspect that your issue is that your external optical connects via USB. You can't boot from a DVD in this device because the device cannot be selected for boot -- PowerPC Macintoshes cannot boot over USB.
There are multiple ways to finesse this. Some (use target disk mode or network boot) require a second Mac. Some (copy the DVD to an external drive) require an external FireWire drive. Or you can obtain a FireWire DVD drive for under $70. Any way you cut this, you are going to have to buy or borrow additional hardware to do this job.
