Usb1.1 is slower than usb2 version, but should read your hard disk,, try connecting with other usb port, some times windows errors effect in detecting,,and sometimes,, problem in usb port connection
did u also tried the external harddrive if have power source,, you plugged correctly,, ,,, check or try using,, control panel> adminstrative tools> computer management > Disk management,, click like this,, and check you can see your external HD,, and if no data present try to format,, from there,, make sure,, you select your external hd, ---caution,

now you do is,, go to control panel,,
now click on the administrative tools > computer management >
in storage section there you can see diskmanagement,,
click on it, and it will take seconds of time to open you all connected harddisks,, and now click on your usb hd to format..,,, this way it should work.. now

I've tried switching ports, as well as using both together. I'm also running XP. What else can I try?
Under disk management, the external HD is not showing. It does appear under my computer, though without any contents.
With another swap of USB ports, the external HD can now be seen.
Now, how does one format an external HD? Thank you.
