Get a registry cleaner program like PC Tools Registry Mechanic. It will clean up and sort your registry files after making changes to your computer. I run mine weekly. Even without removing anything, it will find up to 50 things needing correcting every week. The first time I ran it, I had over 1500 errors. After it was done, by access and processing speed almost doubled.

First, I'm with you. Norton is a virus IMO.

Generally the best way to get rid of Norton is from the Windows Add/Remove programs menu in Control Panel. Look for anything with Symantec in the name and get rid of it. There will generally be three or four different things, sorry I can't remember exactly what they are but one of them is their update program.

How to Activate Norton Antivirus

Step 1:
Uninstall any previous versions of Norton AntiVirus before installing and activating a new version. To do so, click the Windows "Start" button and then "Control Panel."

Step 2:
Double-click "Add or Remove Programs" (Windows XP) to open the "Programs" window. Windows Vista users should instead double-click "Programs and Features."

Step 3:
Find the Norton version you have installed in the list of programs and click "Remove/Uninstall" in Windows XP or "Uninstall" in Windows Vista. Click "Restart Windows Now (Recommended)" when the program removal is complete.

Step 4:
Insert the Norton AntiVirus installation CD into the CD-ROM drive, or, if you downloaded the program from the Internet, double-click the installation file. Click "Install Norton AntiVirus" when the installation wizard opens. Click "Install Options" and click "Browse" if you want select a different location than the default for the program.

Step 5:
Click "User License Agreement." Read it and click "Close" when you are done. Click "Agree and install" to begin the installation. When the installation is complete, Norton AntiVirus will launch automatically.

Step 6:
Click "Activate Now" on the bottom-right corner on the Norton AntiVirus program window. Type in the product key and click "Next." The product key is usually on the installation disc packaging. If you purchased and downloaded the program from the Internet, Symantec will send you an email with your product key.

solution provided by timeformjohn is misleading, and completely useless. this issue is not related to norton at all.

Also the steps included are a complete waste of anyones time.

I cant uninstall norton antivirus 2008

Norton Anti-Virus 2008 was made to not be uninstalled. It had integrated itself into your system files preventing Windows Installer from removing the anti-virus machine. Symantec has made this tool available to remove the product. However believe me when I say traces of Norton will remain until the hard-drive is reformatted.

Once you remove Norton, I highly recommend you stop using Symantec products and check out ESET's product line of Anti-Virus and online-security tools.

System mechanic 6 not finishing

Hi,

Norton's sounds like it's causing you problems. For a quick fix, I might suggest that if you have the systems mechanics 6 disk, that you uninstall it first, and then reinstall it. This will fix your registry and Norton's will then understand that it's a new program and not to block it. If that doesn't work, then I'd uninstall both Norton's and System Mechanics, and first reboot, then install Norton's first, then System Mechanics, which should in order solve your problem.

Good Luck!
