As intimidating as laptops are, you can most likely purchase a replacement part or assembly on ebay (less expensive) or from the manufacturer (more expensive). On ebay, buy new from someone who operates an online store and has high ratings and reviews, such as this vendor. Then you can use this step by step guide to replace the broken hinge with the one you purchased online.
The other option is to bring your laptop to a repair depot, which may be more convenient for you, but will definitely be more costly.
As far as reliability of laptop parts, I've purchased replacement power cords, LCD displays, power inverters, etc, and have no complaints. You just have to make sure that you purchase the right part for the right laptop.
I hope that helps.

This isn't for a Gateway laptop, granted. But all laptops fall into a general replacement like this.

The hinge can't be repaired, but it can be replaced. It's feasible to do it yourself if you're tech savy. Just look online for guides that show you how to replace the hinge on any hp laptop and you should get an idea how to do the replacement step by step. I work for Computer Repair NYC and i have to fix this problem a lot, you can get the hinge on ebay.

Laptop fell and hinge is damaged - is it easy to replace the hinge

Hello,
Most cases the hinge is a part of the LCD screen and bolts to the laptop case. You may need to replace the whole LCD. You best bet would be to give HP a call or look on ebay under your model for parts.

My screen won't stay open. i think the hinges are broken

Hi. The hinges are either broken or worn out. It is possible to replace them but it can be difficult to find them. I recommend calling around to a few local repair shops as they may have an old one of your model that they are using for parts. Here is a link that shows you how to replace a hinge http://www.insidemylaptop.com/repair-replace-broken-hinges-hp-pavilion-dv9000-notebook/

I just started getting this problem myself. I'll let you know if I find a solution. For the time being, I'm pinching the joint with my fingers as hard as I can when I open or close it.

HP *had* issued service alert 08112101 which covers the left display hinge failure.
HP Notebook Left Display Hinge Program
HP Pavilion Notebook
model series affected: dv9000, dv9100, dv9200, dv9400.

This program recently ended on May 31, 2009, but HP may still allow for a grace period.

Otherwise, you'll need the following:
Display panel back panel enclosure (single lamp) 432957-001
Display hinge kit (single lamp) 432963-001
LCD bezel w/ webcam (single lamp) 432955-001

Trained pro's should be able to do this in about 20mins, there is partial lower case disassembly and complete LCD housing dis/re-assembly.
