HP Deskjet 9800 won't print from any program other than toolbox

I have an old HP Deskjet 9800 that has never been installed before. I am running Vista home edition and connecting via USB. I have followed the instruction poster EXACTLY. This printer will not printer from any program other than the toolbox. I have it set as the default printer. I have tried uninstalling and then reinstalling...restarting the printer....restarting the pc. Nothing is working. I have checked HPs website with no solution in sight. Do I just need to toss this one and buy another?

I am sure that the ink cartridge is fine. I have gotten it to print a configuration page and a test page, both have color and black ink in them.

Thanks for your comments. I appreciate all the help that I can get but I do realize that there is no specific Vista should do it itself. I have downloaded the toolbox from HP and installed via the cd. I have also let Vista do it's thing and install it itself. One error that I have gotten is that while installing from the cd, it says that I need IE5.0 or newer. I am running IE8...ugh. electronics are great when they work but a pain when they don't!

Sorry, the other comments were not there when I posted the clarification. You would need to uninstall ALL of the software that was installed from the CD before reinstalling using the HP instructions.

HP does not provide a driver for this printer in Vista. They do, however, provide these instructions for installing using the Vista OS driver provided. Have you tried that? Wayne

You have been installing the Toolbox component.

Hope this helps.

So, you followed the instructions on the site and you had problems ?? Unfortunately, you will get limited function, per the website, but will (should) be able to print.

I'd suggest forgetting about the Toolbox for now. If you can, uninstall it.

    Use this instructions from:

and, if you are getting errors / messages from the above procedure, please let us know.

Alignment problems with hp 9800

Look inside, use alcohol to wipe the encoder strip. The encoder is the clear plastic that runs across behind the carriage assembly. You need to wipe carefully, maybe a Q-tip but don't press too hard. Ink and spots on that strip cause the problem you are seeing.

Print from the toolbox but not Word or Excell

Make sure your printer is set as the "default" printer. You can do this via control panel.

Also make sure your printer drivers are also up to date (visit the HP support secions of the HP web site for this and download what you need from there)

From word try the print option in the drop down menu rather than the print icon and see if it will print from there. It will show you what is set as the default printer and you can change it here too.

If all is good you should be up and running. If not you need to look at other diagnostic options that may be available from the HP software itself.

Hp deskjet 9650 not compatible with Vista 64-bit

Hp Deskjet 9650 printer owner, sorry to inform that there is no Microsoft Windows Vista operating system printer driver solution available for your printer. But there is an alternative way to workaround it so that you can do basic printing with your printer.

As a workaround, an alternate printer driver solution included in Microsoft Windows Vista operating system can be used to perform basic printing to the printer. However you might find that some of the product features are no longer available when using this alternate printer driver, but that is your best option right now.

The alternative HP printer driver that will work with your printer is HP Deskjet 9800.

The Next thing you do is: Install the driver for HP deskjet 9800

1. Verify that the Universal Serial Bus (USB) cable is NOT connected to the printer.
2. Click Start , click Settings , and then click Printers .
3. Click Add a printer .
4. Click Add a local printer .
5. Select the Use an existing port check box.
6. In the Use an existing port drop-down list, select LPT1: (Printer Port) and then click Next .
7. Under Manufacturer on the Install the printer driver dialog box, select HP .
8. Under Printers , select the appropriate alternate driver for the printer (deskjet 9800) and then click Next .
9. In the Printer name text box, type the printer name and then click Next . The printer driver starts to install.

NOTE: The name of the alternate driver displays as the default name. Change this name to the name of the printer, if desired.

10. After the screen stating that the printer was successfully added displays, connect the USB cable / Parallel cable to the printer and to the computer.
11. On the Found New Hardware screen, click Cancel .
12. For USB connected printer, please proceed to step three . For Parallel port connected printer, please proceed to step four .
NOTE: If multiple pop-up windows display, click Cancel on each window.

Next is: Configure the printer

1. In the printer folder, right-click on the name of the printer and then click Properties .
2. Click the Ports tab.
3. Change the port from LPT1 to the newly created USB port, click Apply .

Last step: Print a test page

1. Click the General tab.
2. Click Print Test Page .

Good luck Cheers!!!

Did you make sure that you installed the latest driver from HP's web site for Vista? Some systems will grab the wrong driver if you let it do an automatic install.
