Question about Air Tools & Compressors

1 Answer

Compressor not working well, blows breaker.

I just picked up a Craftsman 6hp 120volt (3450RPM) Compressor from when I plug it in, it runs really sluggishly and then... dies. It also blows the circuit breaker. I'm thinking that it could be the capacitor or something? HELP! I need this to restore my 69' Firebird.

The check valve is defective on the head replace it to fix the problem, it's called a unloader valve. costs $20.00 AND IS EASY TO replace.

try running up this motor when its not installed on the compressor,, if it still blows the trips the motor is faulty,, if it runs ok, but hums when reconted to the compressor the compressor if far to tight for the motor to turn the compressor,,,you can not reset the points in a breaker trip they trip at a set curent if the motor is pulling more amps than the trip is set for it will trip the trip to turn off the curent, the motor will pull far more amps than it should if its over loaded thats why its humming its trying to spin up it but cant so it just keeps pulling more and more amps till the trip cuts out

First, the simple answer - check the AMP draw on the compressor. It should be on the motor or compressor nameplate/tag. Even a small compressor can use alot of power, and blow the breaker if there are other things on a circuit.

Does it seem to run OK for as long as it runs?

6hp, 25 gallon compressor, never cycled back on, blew the breaker. reset the breaker and soon as i flip the compressor it trys to start then blows the breaker right away.

sounds like its the motor drawing too much current, has it got plenty or oil cause they run low and seize up,not the most reliable can be fine but equally can be dramas especially if its from China

Breaker blows out when starting up compressor

there are a number of possible causes. you really need an amprobe to read the draw as the compressor starts up. Then check the label on the motor. There is also an unloader in the air loop that allows the unit to start up with no air pressure against it. to help you you really need to give alittle more info.

Craftsman 6hp 150psi 30gal won't keep running

It sounds like the internal circuit breaker in the motor is heating up and then the breaker trips to shut down the motor. This is the protection so you don't have a fire if the motor burns up. The smell you have is the coils in the motor. Sorry to say that you will need a new motor for this unit. I hope this helps out.
