I have a ranch king it sat for 2 years inside, now the transmission will only engage in high gear. Transmission worked well when parked. Mower never abused well maintained.

Start up the tractor, leave the F&R shifter in neutral, put the speed selector in the higest gear and let out on the clutch.
Now with the clutch released, slowly pull the speed selector back to a lower gear until you reach the lowest speed.
Now put it in the park position and turn off the engine.
Restart your engine and try to drive as normal, this should have cured the problem but if it didn't you are going to have to remove the variable speed pulley and clean & lubricate it

ok first check cable to transmission to make sure it is properly adjusted, Does it lock into park ? (ie does the parking cog engage and hold the car from moving) If the park cog does engage the I suggest rebuilding the transmission as the band inside the transmission may be worn and welded to the drum.

More than likely you have a linkage problem. The cable or mechanical linkage that positions the transmission may have slipped and not allowing your selector to push it all the way up into park. This is a fairly common problem with automatic transmissions. It will allow you to shift into all the other gears but fails to push or pull, which ever the case up far enough to fully engage the park mechanism in your transmission. I have had the same problem on several vehicles over the years. Place the vehicle on level ground if possible and scotch it to where it cannot roll and with the engine off get someone to work the selector while you look for the linkage movement. When it reaches it full extension into park see if there is not an adjustment somewhere on the linkage that will extend or contract it more. The reason I say extend or extract is because some vehicles push the transmission into park and on others it pulls it in. At any rate it isn't going far enough to fully engage the lock inside of the transmission. Probably a small movement of this linkage will solve your problem. If it has no adjustment, then I would go to a local parts house and ask the salesman about it. He can look it up and tell you if it has a bushing or something that has worn to the point that it will not engage. I hope this is helpful and solves your problem. However, there is a chance that you have problems inside your transmission. In all of the years I have been involved with vehicles I have seen this only a couple of times and then they were due to the fact that someone had shifted into park while the vehicle was moving at a fairly high rate of speed.

Hi, well with both wheels off ground, they will turn opposite directions when you turn one of the wheels even in park. now if engine is running and you put it into gear and the driveshaft turns but not the wheels, then someone stole the guts out of your rear end.

The weld on the manual lever is known to break loose. First, with the wheels off the ground, with the lever in the park position, does the drive shaft lock in park? If yes or no sometimes, drop the trans pan. I bet the nut on the lever camd loose.

Ranch King is a brand name of the manufacturer MTD.

Product manuals with part blow-up diagrams are available from MTD's web site,

Models are identified from the model number printed on a label under the mower seat.
The PTO and deck drive belts are shown on one diagram and the transmission drive belt is shown on another. The Form number on my printed Operator's Manual is 770-10526A (22HP, 46in cut) for Hydrostatic 817/818 models.

Parts can be ordered directly from MTD or other distributors on the web.

It is my experience that original brand name MTD belts work best.

The 22HP, 46" mower deck Ranch King Pro has 3 belts:

The drive belt which runs from the engine pulley back to the hydro drive unit to provide over-the-ground propulsion is part #754-0349.

A mower has either an electric PTO or a manual PTO, not both.

The electric PTO belt the provides power to the blade deck (runs around the electric clutch on the engine shaft (activated by electric switch, not the mechanical hand lever that engages the mower deck) is p/n 754-0476 for the 46" deck.

The manual PTO belt the provides power to the blade deck (runs off the pulley on the engine shaft (activated the mechanical hand lever to the left of the steering wheel that engages the mower deck) is p/n 754-0228 for the 46" deck.

The deck belt that goes around the 3 blade spindle assemblies on the mower deck, to drive the grass cutting blades is p/n 754-0349

In my experience, the PTO belt lasts about half a season, the other belts break about every other season when mowing 4 acres weekly.
