This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/getModel!retrieve.pd?pop=true&modelNumber=110.92587400

I assume that you mean that the top agitator is not.

See the section of the Sears site for Agitator, Basket and Tub.

You'll see an item #5 "Clutch, Agitator". These are basically used to allow the top agitator to move only one way. If they are worn (which happens since they are plastic parts) the top agitator may not move either way.

There is also a part #6 "Agitator Auger" that screws into the main agitator shaft from the transmission. If this is loose, the top agitator may not move either.

Both of these are easy to check and repair.

Washer wont agitate or spin

Depending on the brand of washing machine, the agitator may be a single piece unit or a two piece dual action agitator. If the single piece agitator or the lower portion of a dual agitator does not oscillate back and forth during the wash cycle, or if the agitator can be turned on the transmission shaft, then the spline may be damaged and the agitator may need to be replaced. Most agitators are held in place with a bolt that threads into the top of the transmission shaft and is located below the softener dispenser or top cover. Some models use a small set screw in the barrel of the agitator just above the base to secure the agitator to the shaft, while some will use a rubber o-ring to provide a tight fit. When the retaining device is removed you should be able to lift the agitator from the shaft.

Hello,

The problem with the top portion not rotating on the agitater is going to be because of worn out agaitator dogs. This tip i wrote covers exactly how to replace the dogs

Kenmore series 80 washer won't drain after wash cycle

Try the 'drain' portion of a few of the other cycles (heavy, perm. press, delicates) and see if it will drain/spin there. You can also try advancing the timer slowly through the 'spin' portion to see if it kicks in anywhere.

If it will rinse and spin in the other cycles, you most likely have a bad timer.

Hope this helps.

The agitator (upper portion) will not spin. If I

If the bottom agitates and not the top, the problem is likely the 4 "agitator dogs" designed to allow the top agitator to turn only one way.

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number (###.######) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

Look at the section on the Sears site for Agitator, basket and tub.

See the part "Dog, agitator "

Remove the fabric softener unit, lift the top agitator cap (use a screwdriver) and you should see a plastic part in the center of the top agitator with a 1/2" square drive.

Remove the drive and lift off the top agitator. Turning it over you should see the 4 "dogs", replace these and the top agitator should turn in one direction only.

Replace the 1/2" drive, the cap and fabric softener unit and the top agitator should work.

Also see the following illustrated description of the above.

There are pads on the tripod and skid plate that wear out and can be replaced. There is fluid in the tub ring that may have leaked out. The base (tripod) can be bent and cause vibration problems. The flooring material and support can cause this also. I would start with the floor and work up through and eliminate the causes to find the culprit.

The upper portion of the agitator (Kenmore Series 80 top load)stopped spinning as if the thread has stripped. What parts need to be replaced?

Basic top load, direct drive Whirlpool / Kenmore washers with two piece agitators use "agitator dogs" to allow the top section of the agitator to turn in one direction only.

These are plastic pieces and over time can wear.

I have a Kenmore model 42182 top loading washing machine which makes a roaring sound during the spin cycle. It works all actions during the wash portion so I don't think it is the transmission. I am asking...

your model should begin with a c110 or just 110. it sounds like you have a mounting stem and bearing problem. this can get alot worse as time goes on and is a somewhat costly repair. it involves taking out the entrie tub and replacing the critical center bearing and seal. you can check for fine particles of rubber at the base of the transmission as it has been ground down from the spining cycle of your machine.

Thanks.

Bottom agitating, but top freely spins

You need to get an agitator repair kit. Remove the cap on the agitator. Some have a second inside plastic cover/cap. You will need a long extension and rachet and 1/2" socket to remove the hold down bolt. Remove and replace the parts with the kit parts. Replace the cover. 10 minute repair... online kit is about $13.00.

Agitator dogs stipped

the way to do this depends on if it is a dual action or triple action agitatior.
dual action
- Remove fabric softner dispenser
-pull off plastic cap with flat blade screwdriver
- bolt is under plastic cap 7/16"
triple action (bounces up and down)
remove fabric softenr and plastic cap
with a 1/2" drive socket extention, put into square hole and unscrew spring assembly. once unscrewed top portion of agitator will come off

Washer does spin but barely agitates

It sounds like the agitator dogs are worn.
To remove the agitator, pry off the agitator cap and remove the bolt that holds down the agitator. With the bolt out pull up on the top section of the agitator (auger) to remove it. Underneath the auger you should see 4 small white or beige plastic gears (dogs). . Replace those and it should be ok.
