-   Same error message but there is no current version of Microsoft Office working. Had computer problem, HP took back to fix but wiped out the MS Works office files so I purchased again. Maybe a hidden file is the issue?-   yallcavae463

You need to uninstall any pre-release version of the Microsoft Office 2007 system .

it seems that if you have a version of the 2007 Microsoft Office Add-in or Microsoft Save as PDF or XPS installed, this may be the culprit. In both cases, by performing an uninstall on this add-in via the Control Panel, and then installing Expression Web, everything works okay. You can even re-install the Office 2007 add-in when you're done.

uninstall the microsoft office from the control panel in vista ... it will ask for a particular file... have it access that particular file by showing the path.. then something will happen... but still the microsoft office will remain in the control panel.... now re-install the microsoft office and it will get installed.... this is how it worked for me. The way I fixed mine was by doing a system restore, and restoring it back to before I had installed Office 2007 the first time and then I installed it again, and that worked for me.

I used support.microsoft.com/kb/928218/ to manually uninstall Office 2007 Home and Student. Once I followed each of the steps in the article, rebooted my system; the program would install again, otherwise half way through it would stop with error 25004 message. Hopes this helps anyone!

My PC caught a virtumond virus. This was successfully removed but when trying to run any of the Microsoft Office 2007 programmes it comes up with error 25004 Config.xml not specified. A valid config.xml file must be authored when deploying '(null)' Attempts to reinstall the software meet with same error. What can I do??

I am having the same problem as everyone else with this config.xml thing appearing when I am trying to install Office 2007 Home and Student. The first answer DOES NOT WORK because I never had any pre-release Office software on my system, so I would really appreciate if someone else could look for another solution to this.
I solved this problem myself once, but I cannot remember how I did it or figure out how to do it again.

I bought a Dell Laptop which runs on Vista and came with a preinstalled MS office 2007. After a month it suddenly stopped working. I was trying to uninstall the program from Control Panel but a msg pops up saying, "This product installation has been corrupted. Run setup from CD, DVD, or other installation device." So when i try to reinstall it starts to, but a little more than halfway through I get an error that says, " Error 25004.config.xml. A valid config.xml file must be authored when deploying '(null)'.
