Question about Kenmore Washing Machines

1 Answer

I have a Kenmore 70 series 28741

I have a Kenmore 70 series (110.82874120 in sears parts catalog) 28741 is the smaller number. The switch to stop the spin cycle when you open the top is broken..the lever part is broken. I was wondering what the best way to open the top to get to the switch to replace it. I have done motor swaps and had another machine I owned (ge) have to have belts and also had the band come loose and drop all the water years ago. Also done some switch and element replacement on my dryers years ago...no problems. Just need to get the top of this thing open to get the switch out to go get the replacement. Thanks!!!

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/getModel!retrieve.pd?modelNumber=110.82874120+

Go to the section on Top and Cabinet and you should see how the switch mounts to the cabinet.

You'll have to remove the cabinet first.

Please see GURU JSROCK516 Description of how to remove cabinet and access the transmission. http://www.fixya.com/support/r699497-replacing_gearcase

After you've removed the cabinet, the rest should be relatively easy.

Kenmore series 70 fills with water on rise cycle but stops halfway throught then starts agian and finishes is this normal

If this has always stopped during the rinse cycle, most likely it's the "cool down" part of the rinse cycle.

See the following Sears site for manuals. Enter your model number and you should be able to download the proper manual for your washer.

Removing the back panel from a Kenmore 70 series washing machine

First, see the Sears Parts Site for your washer:

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/getModel!retrieve.pd?modelNumber=110.26742500&pathTaken=partSearch

It has a complete parts breakdown and diagrams of the washer:

Then see the following for how to remove the cabinet which will let you get to the back panel.

My washer overflows. it wont stop putting water

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number (110.########) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

(The 110 means that it was manufactured by Whirlpool, you also need to enter the 8 digit model number)

Also see the Whirlpool / Kenmore Service Manual for these washers.

https://secured.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/f7e2147fa98b28cf85257122007475cb/$FILE/L-55.pdf

It has testing procedures as well as a good description of how the washer works.

It sounds like a defective water level switch or water inlet valve.

See the following for how to release the console and cabinet on these machines in order to get to the switch for testing.

http://www.american-appliance.com/catalog/newsdesk_info.php?newsPath=16&newsdesk_id=131

Basically, what happens is:

When the washer is turned on, the water inlet switch is closed allowing water to flow thru the inlet valve. When it senses that the machine is to the level selected by the water level dial, the switch opens shutting the inlet valves.

If the switch or valve is defective, water will continue to enter the machine.

The Whirlpool Service Manual has testing procedures (basis continuity tests with a multimeter) for both the switch and valve.

I have a kenmore 70 series washer and the agitatior just spins freely when off is this normal

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore2_bing.gif / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number (###.######) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

First, I'd pull the agitators and check for worn or damaged splines inside the agitator or on the agitator shaft.

Following is a description of how to take them out.

http://www.american-appliance.com/catalog/newsdesk_info.php?newsPath=16&newsdesk_id=137

I'd also check the Motor Coupler for a worn center rubber piece.

See the following.

It sounds as if your pump is bad.

See the following illustrated description of how to access and check / replace the pump.

Kenmore 70 series washing machine won't drain or

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

The Kenmore / Whirlpool top load uses a reversing motor to initiate the pump for draining and the transmission to spin.

If you cannot hear the motor trying to turn the pump, (but the washer will agitate) the problem points to the Timer, or the Lid Switch.

Try to bypass the Lid Switch by removing the Console and jumping the two outermost pins on the switch.

This is a Whirlpool PDF on how these washers operate. It has a diagram on jumping the switch as well as a detailed section on how the transmission works.

https://secured.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/f7e2147fa98b28cf85257122007475cb/$FILE/L-55.pdf

It also has a troubleshooting guide.

To bypass the switch, you only have to disconnect the power to the washer, tilt the console back, unplug the switch and using an short piece of insulated wire, jump the two outermost contacts on the connector coming from the console and plug the washer back in.

Following is a description of how to gain access to the console and how to remove the cabinet if necessary.

http://www.american-appliance.com/catalog/newsdesk_info.php?newsPath=16&newsdesk_id=131&osCsid=913ba652cd504fb162f87d892bcb427b

With the jumper in place, try to re-start the washer.

If it works, the Lid Switch is a relatively inexpensive part.

I have a kenmore heavy duty 70 series extra capacity plus. it's leaking water under the washer. How do i fix it?

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, directdrive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most ofthe water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number (###.######) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

Seethe Sears site sub-components for the agitator, basket and tub. It'spossible that one of the gaskets or seals has worn over time.

I'd also pull off the cabinet and check the hoses leading to and from the pump. It's also possible that the pump is leaking.

See the following for how to remove the cabinet.
