Generally, you are speaking about a cover for this item..I'm guessing...or the unit would not work. If it is the guide...it distributes the energy in the unit. Replace it immediately.

That would be your waveguide cover. If damaged or discolored, the waveguide cover has been damaged by heat and must be replaced.

It protects your waveguide and magnetron from arcing due to grease and food particles.

The area of the waveguide behind the waveguide cover should be clean, and if rust or flaking is present it must be sanded, then repainted with high temperature appliance paint.

For Dacor model DMT2420S, the waveguide is part number 66345 and you can get it from The Pros here for $11.07 (subject to change).

The service manual is at my site here: http://www.microwavecontrol.com/dmt_2420_sm.pdf and the part list is here: http://www.microwavecontrol.com/dmt_2420_parts_list.pdf.

Dacor DMT2420. Light and Display work fine, and you can type in time for cooking, but when you hit start, it does not make the buzz of it's normal sound, and the turntable doesn't spin.

On the DMT2420, that's a bad bottom door switch, or possibly that switch's mount.

Problem # 1 display goes blank and fuzzy. Problem # 2 Microwave sparks and looks like it's going on fire.

You need display repair ($39.95) and a waveguide cover (assuming your model is DMT2420-something, the cover's part number is 66345, which you can order from the Pros here.

Sudden flames inside the microwave from right side without being turned on. Metal burned somewhat on the inside. Unit was clean and no food was inside. Also it had not been sprayed with anything. Is it...

Quite often this is due to grease or food particles stuck somewhere in the cavity of the oven or stuck on or behind the waveguide cover.

The waveguide cover (also called a spatter shield) is usually about the size of a playing card and often held in place by a plastic rivet.

In some models it is a larger stirrer cover type made of thicker plastic in the ceiling of the oven.

It can be fragile, and the metal edges of the oven behind it can be sharp, so be careful!

The cover and the metal behind it should be cleaned with a mild, non-ammonia cleaner.

The area will first have to be sanded smooth and cleaned and dried thoroughly.

If the cavity metal of the oven is cracked or split, you can use a small amount of steel-based epoxy such as JB-WELD to patch the crack or hole.

Once that dries thoroughly, you can sand it very smooth.

Then you can apply some high-temperature appliance paint, available from places like Wal-Mart, Lowe's or Builder's Square.

If your waveguide cover is burned, it will need to be replaced.

It provides critical protection for the magnetron.

The part would be much cheaper if you get the Sharp version (these ovens are made by Sharp) instead of the Dacor branded part.

The model DMT2420 is essentially the same as model R440D / R540D.

The Sharp part number is PCOVPB085MRP0 (zero on the end) and you can order Sharp parts from Tritronics at http://www.wehaveparts.com

Where exactly is the hole in the microwave?

If it's a hole in the actual metal chassis of the oven, it should not be used and you should contact Dacor customer service:
