Generally, you are speaking about a cover for this item..I'm guessing...or the unit would not work. If it is the distributes the energy in the unit. Replace it immediately.

My microwave arcs every time I try to heat something. The silver colored plate on the interior right side of the cabinet appears to be burned. What happened and can it be fixed?

This arcing is caused by food splatter when something 'popped' or 'exploded' during an earlier cooking cycle. The food particle remained and every time the microwave gets used, this particle continues to cook until it turns into carbon. This can be as small as the tip of a pin. Carbon reacts very violently to RF energy (which is what causes the food to heat). You need to carefully remove the "waveguide cover". Clean it and check for a burned spot. You also need to inspect the inside of the "waveguide" once the cover is off. Clean it also. Make sure there is no grease or other foreign matter inside there and be sure not to leave anything in there (paper towel piece, etc..). If any of the paint inside the waveguide is burned, and if it can't be sanded off and touched up with catalytic paint, you need a new microwave oven. If the burned area is limited to the waveguide cover and you can't find a replacement, you can buy a sheet of mica material from a parts house and use the old cover as a template to make a new one. Also, "If you are on Gilligan's Island" and can't get any new material, you can cut the burned spot out and cover the hole on both sides of the waveguide cover with cellophane tape. Do this at your own risk but usually it works fine.......

The little grey square of something on the right side of the oven got something stuck on it and it ignited. I cleaned off the grey thing and the oven has worked fine for weeks until somehing got stuck...

A "little grey square" may be a waveguide cover. If so, that is where the microwaves come into the cooking area of the unit. Those covers are sensitive to food splatter and moisture..Anything that gets on it will cook and burn and make a hole there. If not being careful when cleaning you can also make hole. If that is what the square is, the waveguide cover will need to be replaced and any arcing behind it or carbon despoisits from the arcing will have to be completely removed before running the unit again. The unit can be run without the cover for testing purposes it only stops food splatter from getting in to the microwave.Microwaves go right through it, l it i not a safety device to prevent leaking. Remove the cover and put a plastic container of water in the unit. Run it to test it. If it arcs, more thorough cleaning and removal of the burn marks is needed. If not replace the cover and you should be good. Only clean those covers with a DAMP cloth, or paper towel. Do NOT soak them or spray them too hard directly.

There is a pad on the interior right side that is made out of cardboard type of material. Seems very flimsy. Does this stay in there? What is its purpose?

That piece is called the waveguide cover. In many ovens it's made of plastic. In others, like yours, it's a mica sheet and does seem rather like cardboard, and is brittle. It's there to cover the hole where the microwaves enter the cooking cavity, so no food particles or grease can get in. The oven can work without the cover, but it's potentially unsafe. Arcing and overheating can result, and the magnetron tube (the microwave source) can be damaged, if food buildup occurs in the waveguide.

Replacement waveguide covers are available for many models, and you can get pieces to make your own if you can't find the exact part. Search the Web for "<your make and model here> waveguide cover". Sears parts and Appliance Parts Pros are good places to start looking, and you may be able to find a suitable replacement if you have an appliance parts store in your area.

When I turn on the microwave to heat anything, it makes a sizzling, cracking noise, and kinda looks like a fire, on the right hand side, as you are facing the microwave.... There is a screen area with the...

It sounds like what you are talking about is an issue with the waveguide cover. It is usually made of a material called Mica. Its purpose is to cover the aperture through which the microwaves enter the oven cavity from where they are produced by the Magnetron behind the control panel. It stops moisture and food particles getting into the "workings" of the microwave.

if your microwave is working ok and behaving itself then there is nothing to worry about, but there may be one of 3 problems that may arise which should be rectified.

1. Its fallen off.

2. It has a hole in it.

3. It is arcing or sparking during use.

In any eventuality it should be replaced. If it has fallen off or got a hole in it then there is the risk of food or moisture getting into the waveguide which will reduce the efficiency of the oven. If it is arcing or sparking then continued use will damage other components in the microwave including the oven cavity which could be costly to rectify.

If there are any issues with your waveguide cover it should be replaced. When new the mica sheet is rigid and firm. Over a period of time it absorbs moisture and gets food splatters on it. It then becomes soft and flexible. The cover can be replaced either with a suitable replacement made by the manufacturer of the microwave or if the old cover is in good enough shape to be used as a template, blank sheets of mica can be purchased and cut to fit.

What is the mica cover?

Hi, a mica cover is inside the oven cavity, usually on the right hand side or in the roof you will usually see a small cover that looks like it is made of cardboard. It is often held in by one or more screws. It is called the waveguide cover. It is usually made of a material called Mica. Its purpose is to cover the aperture through which the microwaves enter the oven cavity from where they are produced by the Magnetron behind the control panel. It stops moisture and food particles getting into the "workings" of the microwave.

There is a rectangular cover on the ceiling of the microwave interior that covers what appears to be a vent. It may be called a waveguide cover. Mine burned up and I need to find a replacement

It is the waveguide cover. Some manufacturers call it a splatter shield or spatter shield.

It will need to be replaced. It provides critical protection for the magnetron.

The Magnetron has failed, causing the waveguide to become damaged. If the waveguide is damaged/burned the microwave can not be repaired and should be replaced.

Waveguide cover for Kenmore microwave

Try replacing the screws with larger ones. Maybe you ordered the wrong piece, if your microwave comes with a mica cover (A fine, square piece of mica) and you received a plastic one, you will need to get the right piece or adapt the one you received.
You can get the mica cover on any microwave service.

Microwave burst into flames

That panel is called the waveguide cover. Its purpose is to protect the wavegudie and the magnetron from grease and food particles. When grease and/or food particles build up, they arc and spark. If it is not too damaged, it can be removed, cleaned, and reinstalled. You should also clean just inside the opening (waveguide) with a damp cloth, but be careful of the sharp edges. If it is too damaged, it will need to be replaced or the magnetron will eventually be damaged. If you can't get parts for this brand you can cut a new one out of waveguide material. I would take the old cover to an appliance parts store in your area. Once it is done, be sure to keep the cover clean. A sample photo of a waveguide cover is attached.
