Did you use a HP cartridge? If not you will always get the error message. If you used a HP cartridge and got the error message try this. Remove the cartridge you changed. Reinstall it. Unplug the printer. Wait 2 minutes and plug it back in.

I purchased ink that stated that it was compatible with my R220. It worked fine for a short while and then I got a message that the cartridges were "not compatible" and it stopped printing. I...

possibly because you bought non-original cartridge (it does not recognize the printer). Try to mount the old ones again and see if you recognize the same message persists imprimanta.Daca ignorance of cartridges means that problem is another possible carrier on the outer cartusele. If with the old cartdriges you have another message then it is a problem with the new purchased cartdriges and should replace them

My black ink ran out so I replaced the ink

Hi:
I have used the printer series that you have for years, and once in awhile, I get a new cartridge that won't immediately print. Often, there is just a bit of dried ink residue on the print head, and that won't allow the cartridge to work correctly.

Some simple things to try are :

1) Remove the black cartridge. and take a damp paper towel and gently swab the print head area. Next, apply some pressure to the sides of the black cartridge, until you see black ink oozing out of the print head. Repeat if needed. Once the ink starts flowing, blot off the excess, and install the cartridge.

If you can't get ink to flow, then the cartridge might be bad. Most of them have an expiration date on the packaging.

I refilled the black cartdrige and now the printer gives me a message like the cartdrige is incompatible.

Sounds like the electronics on your cartridge are bad. You need to either get a brand new cartridge or another refilled cartridge.
