Trying to connect Dell W3706MC to surround sound

I have my Dell w3706mc connected with the optical cable to my new vizio sound bar's optical plug and no sound. I alwo tried to use the analog cables to my tv's audio out and still no sound. I assume I need to somehow change the audio out from my tv's speakers to the optical jack. But don't see a choice for that on the tv's audio menu.

I gave up on the optical cable and have tried the analog cables into the audio out and still does not work.. When I go to the speakers out and switch from on to off all that happens is there is no sound out of the TV speakers but still no sound out of sound bar. This was supposed to be such an easy setup and... 5 hours later nothing...

It is very odd, I just don't get it. I used to use the tv speakers (which are great) and I used a powered subwoofer that I plugged into the subwoofer jack which is right by the audio out right and left RCA jacks. The subwoofer works just fine. The reason I purchased this sound bar is because it came with a wireless subwoofer and that is really all I needed. The sound is still coming out of the TV speakers and if I plug in the old powered sub woofer it works right along with the TV speakers. It just seems odd as the TV speakers are detachable and you must be able to plug into a surround sound system or even a conventional stereo system? I'm starting to wonder if the sound bar is not working? I wish I had something else I could plug it into to test it.

I don't think we are going to be able to figure this one out I called Vizio and they were no help since I don't have a Vizio TV

    Thanks,

    Charles

I finally got it... For some reason the only way it will work is to plug the sound bar directly into the Cable box and only with the RCA plugs, the when I plug the optical cable onto the cable box still no sound, but when I blugged RCA directly into the cable box, boom it worked. Now the only problem is trying to find the learning remote control code for the sound bar to be controlled by the cable box remote...always something, but it sounds great.

I was reading on the Dell website about your television and it appears that the optical out is only for the Digital TV input only. I am assuming that it will only output audio thru that connection when the input on the tv is set for "digital TV".
I found this on the site...
TV Out Volume . Select Fixed if you want to adjust the volume using the remote or volume control on an attached audio receiver. Select Variable if you want to adjust the volume using the TV remote or front panel buttons. Using Variable adjusts the TV volume out not the volume on an attached audio receiver.

It also shows there is a speaker out "on/off" setting on the audio menu. Have you tried changing that? It may turn off the speakers so you can use your reciever.

You should be getting audio from the rca audio outputs....Did you try adjusting the tv out volume in the audio menu? is it set to fixed or variable? That is strange... I can see that the digital audio optical and coax outputs are only supposed to work when the input on the tv is on "Digital TV" but the audio output rca jacks should work all the time. Your other option is to get voltage reducers that turn the speaker output wires into rca jacks you can use safely with your reciever. You can get them online and maybe at radio shack. They are used with car stereo amps...but will work for your situation.

Here is a link to what I was talking about. This is used in mobile audio but will work for what you need if you cannot get the audio outputs working. It takes the 15 watts that the TV outputs to it's speakers and reuduces the wattage down to low level RCA outputs you can use to connect to your reciever.

There might be other models that are cheaper online. This is example of what you could use

Here is one that is in stock and cost $22 dollars

It sounds like your sound bar could be bad...Is the sound bar amplified or passive. If it is passive that might be why...It is getting an un-amplified signal from the tv thru those outputs. the sub-woofer is self amplified. Sorry i could not help you more.

I thought of one more thing you could try..If you try plugging in the sub woofer's rca jack into each rca audio output you should still get noise from subwoofer...that will tell you if the outputs are working. Jsut leave the volume low when you do it because the sub is not designed to process the higher frequency sounds it will get thru those jacks. If you get audio then the problem is probably with the sound bar.

No sound

Hook an external Stereo Receiver (or surround sound system) up to the Audio Out jacks on the back of the TV... this should allow you to hear the sound again.
Hope this helps.

How do I fix bad static? Dell W3706MC 37 in. HDTV LCD has been fine and suddenly the sound has loud static on all sources. Is this a sound circuit failure?

Yes,loud static usually comes from bad isolation of sound signal path so it's probably a frayed cable or a loose jack. Or if you're unlucky some parts inside have failed.
