No picture/sound I have a 32" SANYO TV model # DS31580 that is about 6 years old. The power goes on, but there is no picture or sound? Is this a picture tube?

It is not likely your picture tube especially if the picture was good b4 it went dead.
Read below and decide if you want to tackle the problem yourself if so I’ll help along the way with what info I have. If not contact the nearest repair shop armed with the info below.

A dead set (no picture no sound) can indicate any number of problems – Usually the set is in shutdown or protection mode – this means that the internal circuits have detected a problem with a supply voltage missing, drawing too much current, going over voltage or a short condition.
The first thing to do is power off the set unplug it for 5min. than replug and try again. This in effect resets the main micro and will sometime unlatch a fault and resume working. There are certain common problems based on the make model – for instance convergence output IC’s(CRT projection TV’s) can cause a dead set symptom in many models. Vertical output IC failure can also cause the same symptom (CRT standard and Projection).
The only way to determine the real cause is :
By an educated guess based on experience or by directly troubleshooting the set – checking fuses, measuring voltages and checking for shorts. Many of the intermittent problems such as, int.(Intermittent) no sound or picture, int. picture shrunken or misshaped. These problems are generally due to cold (bad) solder joints (all TV’s and electronics) that break down under slight temperature changes or vibration and are usually verified by physically tapping the suspected area on the circuit board, or by quickly heating or cooling a suspected component or area ( cold spray and hot air gun). The other main culprit is leaky or dried out capacitors or capacitors that change value depending on temperature. These can sometimes be seen as bulged or leaky and have an acrid odour.

This is not a user repairable fault. Should be checked from its main power regulator board, and is a skilled work. Actually this is a repairable fault, but can do only by any technicain.

Tv is on with no picture or sound, only 4 months old!!

Hello
The power supply regulator board to your set has the fault. If you try to open the set, or try to repair it by yourself, the warranty will void. The set must have warranty as it is new. Why do you spend for it? Just contact the nearest authorised service center for Sceptre. the components in this set will be very hard to get from open electronic spare part market, and will costly too.

Apologies to Andy Hi Fi and tvtek who both answered this query yesterday, but I gave out the wrong model of tv. My set takes about 5 minutes to produce a picture, which is then as good as ever. Sound comes...

This fault sounds very much like the CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) is approaching the end of its life. If you can find a TV engineer in your area - preferably one from "the old school" - he may well have a "Tube booster". This sometimes works to "rejuvenate" old CRT's but can also unfortunately, bring an abrupt end to the tube, because it involves passing a higher than normal current through the tube heaters.

Environmentally, it all depends on the age of your current TV and the size of the screen. If it's a fairly large screen, (32") it will probably consume around 250 to 300 Watts of electricity. Modern LCD TV's are more efficient, however gas plasma TV's tend to use slightly more power than LCD models.
As you will know, TV's don't use that much power in comparison to say, a cooker, electric kettle, fan heater or washing machine heater so you can expect to use around 200Watts for your new TV if it has a 32" screen. Power consumption goes up of course, the larger the screen size you have, so if you bought a 40" or 50" screen you would not save anything in power compared with your old CRT type TV.

If your current TV has lasted for 20 years or more then you have done reasonably well. That's not to say that many TV's with conventional CRT's often last MUCH longer than this.
Tandberg CRT TV's have been known to still be working perfectly well after more than 30 years! Much the same with Panasonic.
