On the front panel header where the wires connect, there are two rows of 5 pins. The top row actually has 4 pins with the end one missing, and the bottom row has 5 pins. The first two pins on the top row are for the power LED. The next two pins are for the power switch. The first two pins on the bottom row are for the hard drive LED, and the next two pins are for the reset button (if your machine has one). The LED connections are polarized, so if you get the connector backwards the LED won't light but it won't be damaged. Just turn the plug around and put it back onto the pins if your power light or drive light don't work.

Now, as to the computer not starting. Assuming the problem isn't due to the power switch not being connected correctly, you might have a power supply problem, or the motherboard has failed. Both are common troubles.

Here's a picture (from helpwithpcs.com) of the plug on the cable from the computer power supply to the main board:

This is the view from the end looking at the front of the plug. If you connect the pin marked PS_ON (it's a green wire) to the black ground wire on either side (not directly across), the power supply will turn on and its fan start running if it's working properly. If it doesn't start up, replace the power supply.

If the supply starts normally, your motherboard is likely to blame. You can search online for a replacement if you want to use the exact part. Don't try to get one from e-Machines; there many other sources. You can also use any motherboard that will fit into the case (micro-ATX style) and uses the same processor and memory.

For future reference, use a piece of masking tape with something written on it so that as you remove things, they can be put back where they go. Either that or only remove one part at a time and put it back before disconnecting something else to prevent confusion.

There is usually a set of pins on the corner that are labeled get a magnify glass and light up the board take the glass and look down on one of the corners it is usually on the right corner of the bottom of the board at the bottom of the desktop case. You will usually see a series of abbreviations. LED, HDD, PWR, RES or RE the pins are marked. Now on the wires to the power button you will see the same wire abbreviations. Just hook up the HDD wire to the HDD pin the PWR to the PWR button wire and so on. RESET wire is RE or RES etc. Those really are the only three you will need. Not sure of the exact abbreviations. But they are lettered enough for you to match them. The best thing to do is try to download the board specs and get a look at the pins one side is neg and the other is positive it would be to your best interest to find the mother board specs for you mother board since you went all over the internet and could not find the board specs. just match the LED and the others they are marked PWR is the main and HDD is just showing when the HDD is working. The reset is for the button to reset the computer. It is basic and not that complicated really. Thanks for using FixYa! John

There are may motherboards, but most have writing on them as to what is suppose to plug where. For example, for the power switch, the lettering might be "Pwr" or "Power" or "Pwr sw". The pins are usually together and should fit the plug on the end of the wire.

TRYING TO HOOK UP MU POWER BUTTON NEED TO KNOW

Hi there
The front panel connectors are mainly,
  • harddisk activity connector
  • power switch connector
  • reset switch connector
  • power LED connector
  • speakers connector
  • USB connector
Harddisk activity connector
This normally comes red in colour and is labeled as HDD-LED
Power switch connector
This comes green in colour and is labeled as POWER-SW
Reset switch connector
This usually comes grey in colour and is labeled as RST-SW
Power LED connector
This is usually green in colour and is labled as PWR-LED
Speakers connector
This speaker will give different beep sounds during boot to tell the user if there is any errors. It occupies 4 pins, however only 2 is important for the function. Be sure to connect the red coloured cable to the positive polarity and the black to the negative.

I have a e-machine. Model w3619 a friend sold to me. He unplugged the two power leads that lead from the power button on the front panel from the motherboard.Where do i reconnect them?

The correct wiring plan for this computer is as follows:

Pwr Led Pwr Sw N/C

X X X X O

HDD Rst N/C

Note : N/C = no connection, top row has no pin, bottom row has a pin but not connected.

when you plug in the Pwr Led and HDD connectors, a light should come on, if it doesn't , turn off the pc and turn the connector round on the pins, re -power on your pc.

Hi,

Generaly, the little connectors on the printed side will face the bottom of the case. Also, typically, Black is negative, and white/colour is positive (except on the power sw, it doesn't matter). On the motherboard, where the connectors go, there should be some kind of print saying where to plug them in. (IE, POWER SW, would go into PWR, and HDD LED would go into HDLED and POWER LED would go into PWRLED).

b0dcbba.jpg
It may look different than this, but generally the same kind of layout, as you can see, it shows the positions, as well as positive and negative.

The fact that the fans are running indicates that your power Sw is connected properly.. Make sure that you didn't accidently pull out/loosen anothe connection to the motherboard/harddrive.
