The drivers from dell are usually an self-extracting executable with a .exe extension. This sounds like you have file extensions for known files turned off. Try opening windows explorer, go to Tools -> Folder Options. Click on the View tab, and go down the list until you find "Hide extensions for known file types". Uncheck, Hit Apply, and then OK. You should now be able to see extensions on all of your files.

How do you find an exe file?

Modern software cannot be moved this easily. The Executables require DLL libraries and many other accessory files as well as the fact that they need entries in the windows registry to function. The only way is to reinstall from the original source of the software. Even if you find the exe file you can't just copy it onto another machine and expect it to work. If you are curious about the location of an exe file and you have a shortcut link to the program on your desktop then right click on the shortcut and select properties from the drop down list. The line listed as TARGET will show the entire path to the executable file.

I am connected to internet but get error 651

I am assuming you have purchased a new pc with Windows7 and have a DSL internet connection. If so the following tutorial should prove useful. This is a common problem and known bug within the Windows7 framework that they are working to correct. Keep in mind that this fix is only applicable for the Windows7 operating system.

"The RAS PPPoE driver file "raspppoe.sys" found under c:windowssystem32drivers folder seems to be the root cause of the problem. Fortunately, we can work around the problem simply by renaming the original raspppoe.sys file to something like "raspppoe_orig.sys" copying a working file from a Windows Vista system. If you do not have access to a Windows Vista system click here to download raspppoe.sys file (unzip)."

http://www.windowsreference.com/windows-7/error-651-with-pppoe-connections-in-windows-7/

Once downloaded and unzipped you may rename the old rasppoe file as mentioned above by right clicking the icon and choosing 'rename'. Then copy the new rasppoe file you downloaded into the applicable folder. You will find this file in the following directory C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers. Bear in mind, when searching for the file inside the drivers folder, the .sys file extension may or may not be included in the actual name. If the original file is named 'rasppoe' without the .sys file extension in the name, leave this file extension off when renaming and copying as well.

How does download work?

A download is when you retrieve a file from an external storage location. This could be a local drive you have or from a provider via a website. Typical downloads are those that are music files, drivers for devices, and documents. There are also voluntary and involuntary downloads. Voluntary is when you choose to add a driver or document to your device. Involuntary is when a cookie or other file is added to allow functionality of a program or website. Usually to download any of the above (except involuntary) you will be given a DOWNLOAD button to click on or otherwise choose. If operating a Windows based operating system you will be asked to SAVE or RUN the file. Saving the file places a copy on your computer to be opened, ran, etc. at a later time. Choosing RUN places a copy of the file in a temporary location on your PC and then executes the action such as installation of a program. When the installation is done if you chose RUN then the temporary file is automatically deleted. If you chose SAVE then even when you execute the file action the file stays on your computer. Be careful of what you download and the source of the file. Some downloads contain virus or other malware that will negatively affect your computer. If you utilize virus software the best option is to SAVE the file and then scan it via the antivirus software prior to executing the action. Final comment... Limewire, Youtube, Bittorrent etc are notorious for INFECTED downloads... you should be very cautious if you use these sites. Manufacturer sites like HP, Dell, Apple and sites like CNET are safe bets for files and drivers.

Had to reformat C: on Dell Dimension 3000. Now can't get any sound. Tried to download drivers from Dell but it comes as an application and I can't open it. Any advice please?

Most of the Dell driver downloads are .exe files. They are self-extracting executables (much like a ZIP file). You need to first double-click the downloaded file and when the extraction window pops up, make not of the directory that the file is going to extract to (usually c:\dell or c:\drivers). Once you noted the directory, continue with extracting the files. Then go into your device manager (control panel, system, hardware, device manager) and find the sound device that is either disabled or not loaded properly (usually will have a yellow exclamation mark next to it). Double click the device and "update driver". When prompted, point to the folder that the files extracted to earlier, and then the device should load properly.

Some Dell drivers include a setup.exe file, but most of them follow the above-listed format.

My main computer is vista, the one with wireless router , but I want to use my xp computer with the dell 1450 wireless usb adapter. it won't work

Dell do not provide support for vista on the 1450 USB adapter - see here http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dsn/en/document?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=bsdv&dl=false&docid=20075A1DBD60D650E0401E0A55175C46&doclang=en
I have not tried this - but found on another forum http://www.vistaforums.com/Forum/Topic5380-21-1.aspx olution:
  1. 1) Install the Dell 1450 USB drivers on a PC with XP32 (assuming your target machine is 32-bit)
  2. 2) Copy the "2K" drivers from the install directory ( c:\program files\dell wireless ) to a flash drive.
  3. 3) Copy the "2K" drivers from the flash drive to the Vista machine. After you plug in your 1450 choose to manually select the driver then browse to that folder. You should be up an running in a few seconds.
The extra connection manager software that came with the adapter won't run on Vista but you'll still get a good wireless connection.

I refurbish cptrs for needy & received a Dell PPL or CPiA laptop. Went to Dell and downloaded *.app driver files but don't know how to make *.app work as a driver. Ideas? Oh- Can't get Dell techs to...

It is very simple. Usually drivers comes in the .ZIP, .RAR, .MSI or .EXE formats. Download the drivers in any folder. Then download the winrar software and extract the program at another place. You will find setup.exe or install.exe or similar file to execute. Execute the file and i will do everything automatically. But this will work only with any version of microsoft windows. For MSI or EXE files, just douuble click on their icon and they will do it for you. :-) (ehteshamhusain@gmail.com)
