Dell xps 400 user complains fan roars and unit will not start. cannot duplicate problem

I'm not sure what you mean by "cannot duplicate problem", but will answer best as I can. If the fan is loud, and it is your CPU or case fans revving higher, it may be your CPU is overheating and the unit shuts down to prevent damage to it. If the unit will not start at all and you get no keyboard recognition beep on boot, that means the signal is not getting from the power supply to the BIOS, directing the hard drive to start loading Windows. If that is the case, you have a severe problem with the motherboard or CPU. This kind of problem can't be handled in a forum like this. I suggest you use a computer help forum (free) which is set up for this kind of thing. The one I hang out at is www.suggest-a-fix.com
If the noise you hear is your DVD drive, then there could be something wrong with the DVD drive which is preventing startup, I have had that a few times in my with friends' computers. Try pulling the power cable off the DVD drive and try to boot. If suddenly you boot normally you found your problem.
If your computer has never been cleaned it may be choked with dust; take it out on the back porch and remove the side panel. Reverse-flow the air direction (blow out) from a vacuum cleaner and CAREFULLY blow the dust out of the unit. I suggest using a crevice tool to better direct the airflow. Especially get the dust from the CPU heatsink and fan. You will be surprised at the cloud of dust that comes out.
Other than than, without more detailed information, I cannot be more helpful. Wish you the best!

Dell loud fan noise

Is the computer completing post? This is indicated normally by a single beep after the power button is turned on. On most computers the beep is proceeded by a post screen with the manufactures logo. If the computer is not getting this far, unplug everything but the memory and video. This should cause the computer to give a no hard drive or OS error. If not pull all the memory, this should cause the computer to give a series of beeps (because there is no memory installed). If this does not work either, you could have a bad mother board or power supply.

Hope this helps

After im on it for about five minutes it makes a loud roaring noise and freezes. The noise doesnt stop until i turn it off.

Sounds like a bad hard drive or a bad CPU Fan. Try a different hard drive in the machine, and see if the machine boots up without making that sound and locking up. If it does then that means the original hard drive is bad.

If its not the hard drive then, replace the CPU fan and see if the sound goes away, if it does then you know the CPU Fan is bad.

I have a Presario SR1950NX that is not booting. After turning on power, the fans come on and the DVD drive flickers, then nothing else happens. The keyboard and maonitor stay dormant. Normally, a loud fan...

It may be the clogged fan that caused this problem then resulted to overheat. possibly you need to replace the motherboard. or first, try using a bootable cd to boot your pc up. it may also be an issue with your hard drive not booting up.

Trouble with power up

depending on the kind of sound from the fan, you need to make sure nothing is in the fan path, and dust free, if not replace fan., about your drive to spin up, assuming you are refering to the Hard drive, replace the drive, seem to me the noise is coming from the hard drive, which indicate that your drive is about to go bad, time to back up your datas

Back up your files and buy a replacement drive the grinding noise is the hard drive experiencing mechanical failure and may stop working soon.

sounds as if you may be looking in the wrong spot. If different gearing is drastically changing the symptoms you may want to check the trans. or torque converter. sudden pop with engine rpm increase and lack of power sounds like possible band breakage in transmission or impellor breakage in torque converter.
