If the flash appears to work in every way apart from producing no actual flash, so the red ready light comes on etc then the problem is probably a broken flash tube. Around £150 for nikon to fix or £20 for the parts plus several hours work...but you need to be careful taking it apart due to the high voltages inside (WHICH CAN BE SERIOUSLY DANGEROUS)
If you want to sell this I would be interested.
Thanks
Mark

THE FLASH ON MY NIKON P500 IS NOT WORKING WHEN IT IS RAISED AND I SELECT FLASH ON IT SAYS RAISE FLASH HOW I CAN THIS

To be sure something could be wrong with your camera flash, please put the camera in automatic and try making a picture in a dark situation. The flash should be pop up and fire, when the camera is in focus, and you press the shutter button fully.
Perhaps you know there are situations, the flash does not fire, even when you open it yourself. In the P, S, A and M, it only can fire if the ISO setting is on auto. Some scenes you can select, also won't fire the flash, even when you put it up.
there are more things, to shooting with flash than jute putting it up.
But when you try it like I said above you schools see a flash icon on the display for a few seconds and the flash should fire. If not, I'm afraid you must contact the Nikon service centre close by you.

success.

Flash fires irregularly... good exposures, then suddenly 3 way under exposed/black then a good exposure, the a completely burnt out over-exposed shot! Completely irregular.

If you are referring to the internal flash I would say you are firing the camera faster then the flash can cycle. There is a green lightning bolt that will come on in the viewfinder when the flash has charged. If you fire the first one it may be a charged flash then again you may have popped the flash composed and tripped the shutter before the flash has had a chance to fully charge. You fire again depleting the charge some more and before it has a chance to recover you fire it again so the flash never has a chance to fully charge. You need to wait till the flash ready light come on in the viewfinder.

My nikon flash will fire randomly when connected to camera. I have both a sb600 and and sb 400 and both do the same thing. is this a connection problem?

Sounds like a short in the hot shoe. If it fires randomly, but especially when turned on its side then yes its a short.

If it was just dirty contact then the flash wouldn't fire at all so I dont think it is a connection problem. Make sure he camera is compatible with those flahses, but most Nikon cameras back to the FG should work fine with those.

Nikon D50 -flash won't fire

Try pushing the flash forward just a tiny bit. this model of Nikon has a built in problem with the flash popping up too hard. You can also try to "soften" the pop-up action with your finger instead of just letting it snap up into position.

Flash won't fire

If it clicks when the flash is already open, it seems there would be a problem with the flash open sensor. The camera thinks the flash is closed, so it tries to open it again and it refuses to fire, because firing in the closed position would blow the bulb.

Here's a photo of the sensor in a D70. The D40 flash is a bit different, but if you open it (just unscrew the two little screws in front) you'll recognize the sensor clips. Open and close the flash and see if the make contact when open.

(And DON'T fire the flash when open, or at the very least don't touch anything in there when firing or you'll get zapped.
