Question about Kenmore Washing Machines

5 Answers

Hello, I have a Kenmore Model 417.29042992 front load washer that will not spin. I followed troubleshooting method on sheet number 131807000 9906.at #5 I ran into my first snag when I metered voltage between pin 3 of the 9 pin plug and pin 4 of the 4 pin plug. It measured 21-23 VAC. Then, measuring timer contact 24 and 24b I got 120 VAC cycling on and off at about 5-10 second intervals. so I moved on to #6 and it read infinity. So I measured the motor windings: motor thermal protector-.3 ohms, stator winding (tapped field) .5-.8 ohms, stator winding(full field) 1.6 ohms, armature(rotor) winding 1.4 ohms and tachogenerator coil was 15.9 ohms. I believe this is telling me that I have to replace the motor. How ever I was concerned when I looked for 120VAC at the motor wiring harnesses and could not. The most that I found was about 50 VAC. I hope that this is not indicating a second problem. please let me know if you need any further info to give me an answer. thank you. Jason Lopez

did you look up the data sheet that I refered to in my original post? because it has a series of troubleshooting tips to lead to the final solution. I think that if we were both on the same page, then we could coordinate your skills with my data. Thanks.

I guess what I'm saying is that I am willing to take more measurements or whatever hands on troubleshooting methods that you need from me in order to pinpoint the problem. Instead of saying that it might be one of two problems. I need you to be specific because it costs $ to try these solutions. please reply with what you need from me to help you make a decision as to what the problem is. Thank you.

TEST #3 Motor Circuit
This test checks the wiring to the motor and rotor
position sensor; and the motor and rotor position sensor
themselves.
NOTE: Drain water from tub.
1. See Activation of Manual Diagnostic Test Mode,
page 3 and check the motor and electrical
connections by performing the Spin test under
Manual: Motor, page 2. The following steps assumes
that this step failed.
2. Unplug washer or disconnect power.
3. Check to see if basket will turn freely.
➔ If basket turns freely, go to step 4.
➔ If basket does not turn freely, determine what is
causing the mechanical friction or lock up.
4. Remove the console to access the machine/motor
control assembly. See Accessing & Removing the
Electronic Assemblies, page 6.
5. Visually check that the P5 and P10 connectors are
inserted all the way into the machine/motor control.
➔ If visual checks pass, go to step 6.
➔ If visual checks fail, reconnect P5 and P10 and
repeat step 1.
6. Visually check that the P5 and P10 connectors are
inserted all the way into the machine/motor control.
➔ With an ohmmeter, verify resistance values as
shown below:

If the machine functions except for spin then the problem is most likely the CPU board or the motor control board.

The motor control board could be bad. You can visually inspect this by removing the front panel and taking the two screws out that hold the motor board in place. If the board is bad, the fuse will be blown or the components will be scorched. I recommend replacing it just to be safe.

Copy and paste this link in your address bar and I belie it should have all the tips and info you need for testing and replacing.

Sounds like your selector switch is most likely bad. A bad motor would be second solution.

HI. this is a simple fix here. the Motor speed control board has failed. If you can easily turn the drum or basket by hand with slight resistance, this will confirm that the motor itself is fine. Your findings have confirmed that the motor speed control board is the culprit.

My kenmore elite front load washer model # 110.46742702 displays code F 27. what does this mean?

"F27" is an Overflow Detect error code. The following link explains the code in detail and lists the steps to take to try to resolve:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3608602-f27_error_code

A simple thing to try before assuming you have a component failure is to UNPLUG the washer for at least 30 minutes in an attempt to reset the Central Control Unit (CCU). In some situations these error codes can be erroneous and a simple CCU reset will correct the problem. If the error reappears following a CCU reset, then you have a legitimate problem that you will need to troubleshoot to resolve.

NOTE: Each one of these washers come with a technical data sheet enclosed inside the equipment cabinet. The tech sheet lists all error code definitions, diagnostic procedures, troubleshooting data and wiring diagrams. You may have to refer to the tech sheet to assist in troubleshooting this problem.

The tech sheet is located behind the lower toe panel directly below the washer door. To access, locate and remove the screws under the bottom front edge of the panel. For better access to the screws, you can prop the two front feet of the washer up with a 2x4. With the screws removed, the panel should drop down, then come off. The tech sheet will either be located directly behind the toe panel or affixed to one of the interior cabinet walls.

If you have any questions, please post back and let me know. I hope you find this information helpful.

Kenmore Washer CODE

"F11" is a Serial Communications error. This is an indication of a communications problem between the Central Control Unit (CCU), Motor Control Unit (MCU), or the interconnecting wiring between the two. The following link explains:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3608695-f11_error_code

For a full explanation of all the error codes, each one of these washers comes with a technical data sheet inside.

To access, you will need to remove the lower toe panel under the door. The access screws are located under the bottom front edge of the panel. You may have to prop the two front feet of the washer up for better access ( a 2x4 works well for this). With the screws removed, the panel should drop down, then come off. If the tech sheet isn't directly behind the panel, it will be affixed to one of the interior cabinet walls.

The tech sheet lists all error code definitions, troubleshooting data, diagnostics procedures and wiring diagrams. I mention the tech sheet because you may need it to troubleshoot this error code.

How do I put a Kenmore 417.44092500 into test mode

Each one of these washers comes with a technical datra sheet inside. The tech sheet lists all error code definitions, troubleshooting data, diagnostics procedures and wiring diagrams. Some model washers have two versions of diagnostics that include SHORT and LONG step modes to include simple and more advanced troubleshooting procedures. Since the procedures for entering diagnostics differs between models, it is recommended that you refer to this tech sheet to ensure you perform the procedures correctly.

Washer manual

If you are looking for an Owner's Manual, go to managemyhome.com and type in your model number in the following format: "110.28032700" under the "Manuals" link. Your owner's manual is available in a .pdf (adobe) format that you can download or print for FREE.

If you need technical data sheet to troubleshoot a problem, the washer comes with a tech sheet inside the cabinet. It is located between the wash tub and cabinet in the front of the washer. The tech sheet includes all diagnostics procedures, fault codes and technical data to troubleshoot any problems you may encounter.

You can access it by lifting the washer top, or by reaching up from the bottom of the washer. If you choose to open the washer top, you need to locate the two retaining clips along the front of the washer in the seam where the top panel meets the front of the washer. Push in on the retaining clips and the top panel will pop free and can be lifted up. Make sure you hold the lid closed while lifting, so that it does not fly open when lifting the top. I recommend taping it closed.

If the tech sheet is missing, you can order a new one. The part number is W10026628.

If you have questions, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

Clothes washer won't drain - digital display shows LD

looking at the tech sheet for this, it appears to be a standard whirlpool top load but with electronic controls, correct? normalling with this type a lid switch is the issue but the electronics would have a different code for this, LD is Long Drain for this model. suspect a transmission but this should help you troubleshoot. go to www.servicematters.com and click technical reference - tech library - tech sheets, enter model minus 110.prefix. this will show tech sheet with diagnostics. this book can also be found inside your console.

Washer wont spin

You may be right, but before you rule completely on the motor, have you checked the Spin Control (sometimes referred to as a Motor Control Unit)? My experience with this unit usually has the Spoin Control board going bad more frequently. There should be a tech sheet located inside the washer behind the front panel under the door somewhere. The tech sheet should include all steps necessary in determing how to rule whether the motor windings are good, or the whether Spin Control board has failed. If you decide to replace the parts yourself, you can find them at repairclinic.com and searspartsdirect.com. Repairclinic has better pricing, but Sears has better diagrams used in parts identification and troubleshooting. The parts you may need are as follows:

Repairclinic:
Item 1206430 Spin Control
Item 823073 Motor-sole

Searspartsdirect
Item 4 (p/n #134149220) Speed Control (Under "PANELS/HOSES" heading)
Item 19 (p/n # 131770600) Motor-sole (Under DRUM/MOTOR" heading)

Of course...you can do your own comparitive pricing if you don't wish to shop online. Just use the Sears part numbers as a reference.

I hope this helps. Post back and let me know if you need further assistance.
