Did you check the connection from the PSU to the mobo? Did it just suddenly die?

  • Doug Copp Jun 13, 2013

Water got sprayed on it. I tested the power supply by shorting the fan. The fan worked. So, I figured it was the mobo. I bought a new mobo. Still didn't work. I bought a new power supply. Still doesn't work. I checked the switch and power cord with a meter both work. All connections are connected and look good. I even tried turning it on with the front cover off. still dead.

A dead CPU will not hinder a board from powering up. The board is unlikely to POST. However, you should heard attempts at powering up and immediate shutdown. Or, you will see the PSU comes on but system not boot.

No mobo, but, CPU.

If no failed attempts at boot, no indicator lights, then you have either a failed power supply or DEAD motherboard.

Good luck

Motherboard replace processor cpu i have an hp pavilion a820n tower with no cpu or power supply can u tell me what kind i need?

the processor to fit the mobo is a pentium 4 socket 775. the original was a 3.2G according to the HP website.
most standard 500 watt power supplies should fit.
it does concern me why there is no processor or power supply in it though.
are you sure the mobo is ok? the only reason I would think these parts have been removed is because the mobo is dead and they've been transplanted into something else.

Computer won't do anything, keyboard does not light up, screen is blank

So there is not so much as a BIOS message on screen? Any beeps?
If there is no life at all, you have a CPU/motherboard failure. This may be direct or indirect (e.g. no power to MoBo). Check your connections.
Otherwise, your boot device may not be operating. This is usually a dead or disconnected HDD. Check that it is plugged in. Does it get warm? Can you feel any vibrations from it? It should spin even if your cpu is dead but MoBo is alive.

HP P4SD, its running good with 4 gb RAM, P4 3.0ghz, and a couple sata hd. The problem is the fan output voltage, i havent been able to read the output chassis and cpu cooler pins voltage cause i can find...

"i can find my dmm?" did you mean CAN'T?
"its clearly off", what is off?
the fans are 3 pins,2 are power, one is RPM tachometer.
"it all works fine", so you can boot and run any OS, ?

"the voltage reads +12vdc", where, at fan or PSU?
the fans run off 12vdc, they are DC motors (from outside fan)
if the fan runs slow at 12vdc the the fan is bad or is a low RPM
fan, as some are, bigger fans run slow, for less noise.!

first is the CPU fan it must run full speed, if not the CPU will overheat in seconds and ALL CPU shut them selves (by there selves) this way. so CPU fan is first. what does it do... there....?

then BIOS screens. GOT BIOS UP? and running? with, ESC key pressed>.
let me guess your symptoms
1: PC dead. will not boot.
2: BIOS dead.
3: all fans DEAD,.
4: power switch works and all PSU voltages read right, (seems not)/?
5: if the PSU power wire reads right(DMM), matching the side sticker voltages, and the CPU is dead, the MOBO is dead, or CPU is toasted.

here is a modern PSU, sticker.
see 5 to 10 power lines, see them. all must read correctly
if a fan is dead, then its dead if 12vdc is present on the fan power pins.

System dead - checked switch, changed Power supply

Sounds like either you have a faulty memory stick, faulty CPU or CPU fan or a faulty Mobo..

HI, I have an Acer Aspire AM5641-B5540A. THE SYSTEM IS COMPLETELY DEAD. i HAVE RULED OUT A BAD POWER SUPPLY. WHAT DO YOU THINK COULD BE THE PROBLEM?

Hi,
I understand now that you really checked out that power supply. Before we rule out a dead mobo, you should make sure the on off switch on the computer case is not broken.

Look on your mobo and find the power switch leads from your case power button to your mobo and remove them. Short out these two pins with a small screw driver and see if computer goes on.

If that fails, and you checked your memory and CPU, then well, R.I.P. motherboard.

Dimension 4550 CN 02U819 power supply works but

many dells take proprietary power supplies. if you are using an aftermarket power supply, then you may have burned out your mobo. irregardless, your mobo may be dead, and that mey be the very problem.

Maybe a silly question to ask; but did you connect the processor power lead, as unlike some processors this needs a seperate supply.
