Not sure if this is older machine, but some will not start with the lid up. Could be the switch contact or bad connection at the switch or a broken post that is supposed to depress the switch when closed. Some new machines are more dependent on computer chips and that might mean a bad solder joint and you jostled and made it connect when you slammed it hard. My bet is on the previous mentioned about the switch suggestions.

HI. the first action is to test the lid switch. The lid switch ensures that the lid is closed before enabling the machine to spin or agitate. This feature was added after serious injuries resulted from people reaching into an operating washing machine. For this reason, the lid switch should never be bypassed. Aside from electrical problems, the switch may suffer from a mechanical problem. The lid may have a striker which depresses the switch when the lid is closed. Make sure the striker is functioning and aligned with the hole over the switch. Inspect the switch and make sure the metal strip is not bent out of position (if present). If your switch uses a mercury switch, make sure the mercury envelops the internal contacts when it is in the closed lid position. Your design may differ, so inspect it for proper operation before proceeding to the electrical testing. There are two primary types of lid switches. One type on which you can directly test the terminals on the switch and another style where you have to test it at the wiring harness. In either case the method for testing the switch is the same. If a wiring harness is used, separate the two pieces of the harness and test the side of the harness that connects to the switch. Test the switch for continuity using a multimeter. Set the multimeter to the ohms setting X1. Place a probe on each terminal. The multimeter should display a reading of infinity. Depress the button on the lid switch and the reading should change from a reading of infinity to roughly zero. If it does not pass both of these tests, the switch should be replaced.

Some lid switches also have a fuse, you can visually inspect the fuse or test it for continuity with a multimeter. If the fuse is bad, replace it with one of the same rating.

Can i use my washing machine with no lid switch

as long as everything is working it's ok,all it is is a safety switch so the washer won't run with the lid open,a kid could open the lid when it's spinning and it won't shut down and if the kid sticks his or her hand or arm inside it could get ugly so it's a safety switch that's it.

The contact button (part where you put the door down to make the washer start to agitate) something came apart....washer is filled with water and now won't go. The part came out.

you broke the lid switch, send the full model number located under the lid, lift the lid up,follow the lid to the bottom and look right under it and you'll see the model number,it will start with like 110.

Water fills in, but wash cycle won't start. spin cycle works, changed motor still won't work

Its either in the lid switch or timer. Examine the lid switch. Try starting the wash cycle and press in on lid switch to make sure it activates. If the lid switch is good and you dont hear the motor trying to activate during wash than its in the timer. Does the timer advance? Please comment me back If you need further assistance.

what cycle does it happen in?close the lid and open it a few times, does it make a clicking sound,if it does i would say the switch is good, also you can do this, next time it happens open the lid carefully without banging the machine so you don't disturb anything, get a screw driver and stick it in the hole and see if it runs, if it does i'd say it's the switch, but i've seen this before right before it goes into the spin cycles, the clutch doesn't fall in the tranny. and when the lid is opened and closed the clutch falls.keep an eye on it and see where on the timer this happens, make a mark and see if it does it in the same spot, depending on how hard you close the lid it could be the switch, the timer sticking,i've tapped the timer when something like this happens and it sometimes starts or the clutch in the tranny, when you close the lid did you ever notice if you heard a clunking sound and then it starts to spin..also if you open the top console, unplug the lid switch and stick a jumper wire in the two outside holes of the part you unplug, the lid switch is closest to the right side clip and it's a white connector, you can bypass the switch to check it, all it is is a safety so the machine won't run with the lid open or instead of doing that you can stick a screw driver into the hole and let the machine run like that if you think it's the switch, let me know what you find.

I can't get washer to start. I believe the top

Washing machines have a safety switch on the lid. If the lid isn't shut, if won't run. You may have upset the safety switch. Depending on the machine, it should either have a micro switch that is tripped by the lid or the lid will have a tab that hits a switch as the lid closes... be sure to listen for a positive click ... you may try bending the hinge a bit to make proper contact too.

Started the washer and then it stopped and machine

Try pushing the basket to the back so you can reach the lid switch housing - you should be able to re-align it by hand.
If that is impossible, that means the lid switch plastic housing broke loose and needs to be replaced.
I would need a model # so I can help you with instructions.
