Question about Microwave Ovens

1 Answer

Amana Radarange, model aco1860aw, 1000w. Didn't heat up about a week ago then started working fine again. Now does not heat again. Sounds fine just like it always did.

If the unit /microwave does not heats but is getting properly ON then this has to be checked :-------- Confirm 110-120 volts AC is entering the primary coil on the high voltage transformer....meter works but can be fooled, I usually rig up a light socket and household light bulb and hook that to the 2 input wires for the transformer and see if the light works or not when you run the microwave....can even set a power level and watch the light go on and off. Discharge the capacitor first before attempting any checks or tests.

Scary but works!....

If ok, put those 2 wires back on the transformer. Discharge the capacitor .
Remove the 2 wires going to the magnetron....run the microwave a few seconds ( 2-3 ) and remove power....again discharge the high voltage capacitor . If you got a good crack&spark when you discharge the cap the second time you are creating high voltage but not using it ( bad magnetron or loose High Voltage wire somewhere )....if you get no crack&spark you are not creating high voltage.

How to check a common high voltage diode - click here. Check the diode with one end off/disconnected....should show continuity one way, reverse your meter leads and none the other way.....many meters are not high/good enough and often show no continuity ( infinity ) in both directions. A full continuity reading in both directions (0 ohms) on the diode may be shorted/bad one!
-------------------------------------------------
Q - The microwave makes a loud "hum or buzz" noise but will not heat up the food?
A - 9 times out of 10 this is usually this is a bad magnetron, the other time is sometimes a bad high voltage diode. See components section.
-----------------------------------------------
Q - My microwave is running and sounds like it is working but will not heat up anything.
A - Many thing can do this but, common things are....loose high voltage wire.....poor solder joint on board.....magnetron.....power relay.....
--------------------------------------------------
Q - The microwave display counts down and the inside light is on, but nothing is heating and the fan is not running.
A - This most commonly is a bad door switch, other possible problems are a faulty relay or solder joint on the power module, but a bad door switch is most common.
---------------------------------------
Q - The fan in my microwave oven is not running will this hurt my microwave?
A - YES, the fan cools the magnetron and electronics, take the microwave in for service, most fans are not too expensive to replace.

Stopped heating

The magnetron (the part that heats the food) may be bad or the circuitry to the magnetron may have burned out. Basically my advice is that if you have no electrical expertise, it isn't worth fixing. The magnetron if bad, costs almost as much as a new microwave. If you open it up (make sure it has been unplugged for a few hours and don't seen any obvious burnt parts, then most likely the magnetron is done and a new microwave is the way to go.

Let me know how this works out for you.

OTR Amana microwave- No power, lights, clock or sounds.

Either your magnetron, cooling fan, or the magnetron thermostat is failing.

Since it's less than one year old, it would be fully covered under warranty. I'd suggest contacting the manufacturer to get it fixed free.

Mwave made loud buzzing noise then didn't heat up anymore

When there's a loud buzz like that, it does not heat, and does not blow the fuse, it is usually a defective magnetron. Did it sound something like someone making a "gurgling" sound into a coffee cup? I think this has a a one-year warranty, with n five-year warranty covering the magnetron.
