Check your battery connections and connections to your starter. Try jumping the starter directly with a jumper cable. If it turns over quickly then you have either a bad battery or bad connections.

If it won't turn over with a direct boost to the starter, you need starter and or solenoid work.

Hope this helps!

Sudden loss of spark? briggs 21 hp.

The way that this engine is turned off is to ground the wire to the ignition module. This is located under the flywheel shroud bolted next to the flywheel, as the flywheel spins this module makes electricity and stores it till the magnet on the flywheels trips it and it dumps its electricity out the spark plug wire. It is everything that has anything to do with spark. that little ground wire on it is what shuts it off. this ground wire is ran in series through many safety switches including seat, blades, transmission, brake and also the Key switch. If everything is right this will allow the little wire to be ungrounded and it will have spark.I feel to make this story complete ,when the key is on there is also electricity through the key switch from the battery feeding the fuel solenoid on the bottom of the carburetor which will also shut of the engine from the lack of fuel but has nothing to do with spark but one more pain in the safety nightmare.Short of throwing money at this mower you need to know if it is one of the safety or key switch or if it is the ignition module. Remove the flywheel shroud, unplug the little wire , it should be a flat spade , turn it over with the key and see if you have spark. If you do then it is the tractor safety's or key switch . Let us know at the end of your test. Briggs and Stratton Modules

Have 303447 briggs 16 hp only fires one cylinder

Have you also changed the spark plug too. The ignition circuit is pretty simple, from the battery, the Coil is energized, the "points" or equivalent, through the "Distributor" or equivalent, and onto the Spark Plug. So it is a simple matter to work along the path, proving the "Integrity" at each, point by testing. IF it still doesn't fire after ensuring all Leads are OK, the Spark Plugs are proven OK, the Cables, the Points, & Distributor, . IT is either that or the Ignition Timing is OFF. Please check all those points.

Replace coil

If, by coil, you are referring to the ignition armature and since you didn't specify what brand of engine you have I will give you instructions for Briggs: ((The instructions are similar with MOST engines with a few variances.))

Disconnect the spark plug2.gif wire from the spark plug, remove the blower housing from the top of the engine (That is the half round/half square metal cover on top of your engine, this will give you access to the ignition armature:

Installing And Adjusting A New Ignition Armature

An ignition armature must be set at a precise distance from the flywheel. Ask your Briggs & Stratton Authorized Dealer or consult our Engine Check Chart for the proper gap for your engine. Common armature gap ranges are .006- .010" and .010 - .014". Armatures are often packaged with a shim to assist in setting the gap. Microfiche or index cards of the proper thickness also work well.
  1. Remove the old ignition armature mounting screws (image A). Then, disconnect the stop switch wire from the flywheel brake and remove the armature.
  2. Attach a replacement armature from the original engine manufacturer, using mounting screws (image A). Then, push the armature away from the flywheel and tighten one screw (image B).
  3. Turn the flywheel so the magnets are on the opposite side from the ignition armature (image C).
  4. Place the appropriate shim between the rim of the flywheel and the ignition armature. While holding the shim, turn the flywheel until the magnets are directly adjacent to the armature (image D).
  5. Loosen the tight screw so the magnets pull the ignition armature against the flywheel and shim. Then, tighten both mounting screws and rotate the flywheel until the shim slips free.

Usually when you have zero spark, it's one of 3 things. Either there's a shutoff that is trying to shut it off when it's not supposed to, the coil is bad, or the flywheel key is sheared.
