Question about Nikon SB-400 Flash

1 Answer

Batteries leaked, now it won't work

I love my SB-400, but left it unattended for too long and the batteries leaked out onto the battery compartment lid [with contacts]. I've cleaned it up the best I can, but with new batteries I get no action, no ready light. Maybe the contact pad is etched? Ideas?

When batteries leak, that fluid can runn all around the inside nad in the wires and disolve the tiny connections on the circut boards. If the contact are really clean and shiney bright, and the flash won't work still...it may be time to buy a new flash.

How long can the charger be left charging unattended?

it can be left on and unattended for 24 hours
as the battery reaches full charge the charge rate is slowed down until it is just working
if however the power to the charger is turned off , there is every possibility that the battery will discharge back through the charger
most ipab, laptop ,phones take around 4 hours to be fully charged from 5% charge

Battery leaks in flash light battery compartment

Take a Q-tip and wet the end with a solution of water and baking soda. Repeat until you have cleaned all of the sulfate (the white powder) from the contacts and battery compartment. Use dry Q-tips to prevent a buildup of the solution. After the sulfate is removed, rub a clean eraser mounted to the end of a pencil, on the contacts to remove any oxide which acts as an insulator. Once cleaned, put in new batteries and it should work. If you are not going to use your camera for some time, remove the batteries.

My SB 600 flash won't turn on. I replaced the batteries and still won't turn on. Anything else I can do?

Answering a question with a question may solve your problem.
The batteries you took out of the flash unit were they dead and how long had they been sitting in the flash? If the batteries had no life left and had been sitting for some time it's possible that there is corrosion in the battery compartment. That corrosion will look like white powder or could even be black. You will need to get that out of there and clean the contacts, don't get that stuff on you or blow in the compartment in case you have it come up into your face or eyes. If the compartment is clean it's a good possibility that the batteries were installed incorrectly all it takes is one to be out of sequence and it wont' work.
