Change a Network Password

A network password is a combination of alphanumeric characters that users must enter in order to access a local area network.

Wireless routers use this password to protect the network from unauthorized users who could potentially steal bandwidth from the network, access sensitive data and view the information being sent to and from the network's router.

To change your network password, you must log on to the router's URL and access its security settings.

Type the router's URL into your web browser.
To access and change any settings on your router, you must log in to the router's URL.

This will allow your computer to communicate with the router and access the router's main page. When accessing the router's URL, use the same computer that was used to install the router.

If you do not know the router's URL, look for this information in the router's manual or on the manufacturer's website.

After entering the URL into the web browser's address bar, press "Enter" or click the "Go" button on the browser.

Input the router's default username and password.

Once you enter the router's URL into your web browser, a dialog box will appear requiring you to input the router's username and password. (Note that this password is not the network password.)
Unless you have previously changed the router's username and password, input the defaults.

Many routers have the default username of "admin" and have the password set as "password" or have no password at all.

To find out your router's default username and password, check the documentation that came with your router or check the manufacturer's website. Click "OK" to proceed to the router's main page.

Access the router's security settings.
Depending on your brand of router, there will be tabs or links on the router's main page.

One of these will contain the page for changing your security settings.
Find and click the link or tab.

This page will contain several textboxes, one of which will contain the SSID (name of the network) and two textboxes for changing the network password.

Select an encryption type and change the network password.
Most new routers offer WEP (Wired Equivalency Privacy) security or WPA security.

Select the type of security and change the network password by typing in a new password in the two text boxes.

When you are finished, click "OK."

Save your changes and log out.

After changing the network password, you must click "Save" or "Apply" to keep the password change.

Log out of the router by clicking the "Logout" or "Exit" link on the router's main page.

If you leave the main page open for a certain period of time, you may be logged out automatically.

Trying to set new password for tenda wireless router

you need to access the router's GUI page to change the security key of the routers/
remember, once you change the security key, it should be changed in all the devices you got connected wireless.
you can access the GUI page by typing either 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 (most of the routers have this default setting) in address bar of internet explorer.
you can find the exact numbers by going to start>run>type "cmd">type "ipconfig">enter
you will see the default gateway number which is the one you need to type in a address bar of the internet explorer. (these steps work only if you get the computer connected with the Ethernet cable first to the router)
once you access the gui page, you have an option to change the wireless key under wireless section>security.
need to mention that when you access the GUI page, you will be welcomed by a username and password log in option. the default username and password again is admin in most cases. if it doesn't work ,check with the manual of the router you got.
if you still need more clarifications or steps on this, please reply to the post.

I want to change password for wifi network

1
Open up an Internet browser window on your computer system. To gain access to the default settings, type in the default IP address of the wireless router in your Internet browser's address bar and press enter. You must refer to the wireless router's documentation or navigate to the manufacturer's website for the correct IP address.

2
Type the default user name and password in the security dialog box that appears, then press Enter on your keyboard. Because different router manufacturers use different default user names and passwords, refer back to your router's documentation or support webpage for the correct information.

3
Navigate through the router administration pages to find the wireless router's administrator password settings. Change the default user name and password to a unique set so that possible unauthorized access to your router settings will not take place. Make sure to hit "Save Settings" to complete the change.

4
Set up your wireless security settings by navigating to the proper administration settings page. By default, wireless routers do not come with a password for connectivity access. Choose the appropriate wireless security level you need and type in a unique user name and password. Save these new settings and log out of the router's administration setup.

5
Write down the user names and passwords for both network access and the administration setup page. Keep these user names and passwords in a safe place.

Thanks.
Have a great day.

I have forgotten my wireless password

To reset your router, use the following steps:
Press the reset button for 30 seconds. The settings should now be returned to the factory default settings, meaning any changes you had made would be deleted.
Open up your Web browser and enter “192.168.1.1′ in the address bar. For the login, leave a blank ID and enter “admin” as the password. The router has now been reset. Follow the steps in Securing Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Router to secure your router

To secure your Linksys WRT54G wireless router, follow these steps:
Open your Internet browser and enter the following in the address bar: http://192.168.1.1. Enter the user ID and password for your router. If you haven’t changed it, the default password is “admin”. We will change it later if you haven’t already changed it. You should now see the “Basic Setup” Web page display in your browser. Scroll down the page until you see “Maximum Number of DHCP Users”. This option will assign a specific number of IP address to computers. If more than this number of computers tries to connect to your router, they will not be able to.
Count the number of computers that will connect to the router, and type it into the “Maximum Number of DHCP Users textbox”. Scroll down to the bottom of the Web page and click “Save Settings”. Once the settings have been saved, click “Continue” to return to the Web page. At the top of the Web page, click the “Administration” option in the menu bar. On the “Management” Web page, you should see two password text boxes. This is where you should change your administrative password. Type in a new secure password into both boxes. If you need help creating a secure password, please read Creating Secure Passwords. Once you have changed your password, click “Save Settings” at the bottom of the Web page. You may be prompted to login again, if you are then enter you new password in the password field. Navigate back to the “Management” Web page by clicking the “Administrative” option in the menu. We will now encrypt your connection to your router setup from your computer. To do this click the “HTTPS” checkbox next to the “Access Server” option. Once again, click the “Save Settings” button at the bottom of the Web page. You won’t get the settings saved page again because the URL in the address bar is not longer correct. Since you have changed your connection to HTTPS, it you need to specify that in the address when you connect to the router setup.
In your browser, change the address to: https://192.168.1.1. If you get a security error, ignore the error and continue to the Web page.
Login with your password and then click the “Wireless” menu option. Beside the “Wireless Network Name (SSID)” option, type in a name for you network connection. Click the “Save Settings” button and the “Continue” button to return to the “Basic Wireless Settings” page. Click the “Wireless Security” sub-menu option at the top of the page. This is where we will provide the most important security setting. Next to “Security Mode”, select “WPA – Personal” from the drop-down list. If you have trouble connecting to your wireless connection, you can try selecting “WEP”, but your connection will be much less secure. For more information about WEP and WPA please read Wireless Security: WEP and WPA. Next to “WPA Algorithms”, select “AES”. Once again if you have trouble connecting to your wireless router, select “TKIP”. Now you must get very creative. Specify a long “WPA Shared Key” with a mix of upper and lower case letters, numbers and punctuation. Once again, please read Creating Secure Passwords for tips on how to do this. In this case the longer the better. Make sure you write down this key somewhere, either on a piece of paper or in a text document on your computer. You will need this information when you connect to your wireless network.
Click the “Save Settings” button at the bottom of the Web page, and then the “Continue” button. Now you are all done securing your wireless router and network. All you need to do is connect to your network, and enter your “WPA Shared Key” exactly as you specified it.

Wireless connection

You probably need to goto your routers web page and change the name there.

While you are there it is a good idea to setup at least WEP security if you have not done so already.

To get there, usually, while you are connected, you can look at the properties of your connection, and get your default gateway's IP address.

In a web browser, put this IP number of your default gateway into the browser's address bar and click go. It should load your router's administration web page. If it has a password and you dont know what that is then it is probably the default password.

To get the default password for your router, into Google search for example if you has a linksys router, search Google for "linksys default password" this should bring up the default password for a linksys router. usually a combination of "admin/password".

Once logged into the administration web page, the network name is listed under "SSID".
