Gamecube Error-The disc could not be read (not a software issue)

On my Gamecube, I get an error, The disc could not be read. Upon cleaning and trying many different game discs, the issue remains. This issue must be in the deck or reader. Is the repair cost worth it or would I be better off buying a new/used one. Is this something I can fix myself or does it need to go to shop?
