Only way is through the power settings in the control panel.

A few handy tricks are:

disable the wireless antenna when you are not using it (the device uses power while it continuously scans for networks)

dim the monitor as much as you can

remove cd's from the drive when you are not using it,

remove any SD cards or USB thumb drives when not in use

Hope this helps. Aside from all of this I recommend picking up a backup battery that can be swaped when your current one goes dead. In essence it doubles your use time.

Pretty limited possibilities- Go to the Power Options folder in your Control Panel; you'll find some settings there that can prolong battery life but they are mostly of a kind that disables your use.
If the ambient light conditions allow it, you can set screen brightness (contrast won't make any difference to power usage) to a lower point. This will help some since the inverter for the LCD backlight does require power even if the hard drive and CPU are at an idle or off.

Toshiba satellite A505D-S6968 I turn it on and everything lights up but I get a blank screen. Nothing at all the keyboard is lit up and so are the power buttons

Can you see anything on the screen in a bright light? A ghost image? Fan spins? Sounds? Only a black screen? Has there been ANY damage? Drop? Bump? Jar? It could be the Monitor, Inverter, backlighting, lose connection in the rear of the monitor, the switch the controls the lighting of the monitor when you open and close the lid? Hard to be sure without troubleshooting. Here's a video to give you some tips:

Make a device that you connect to your parallell port,
a lot of Toshiba computers remove the password when you boot it up.
The device, named "loopback" ,could be made out of any parallell wire with 25pins connectors (db25).
Connect these pins: 1-5-10, 2-11, 3-17, 4-12, 6-16, 7-13, 8-14, 9-15, 18-25.

there is a registry tweek to remove an upper and lower bound reg keys ok the drive which will allow it to work. my drive did not work out of the box but after removing two registry keys it works fine! search google to find the satellite registry hack to fix the cd rom drive. again it involves deleting an upper and lower bound key in the registry. good luck!
