Microwave hums and panel lights up when plugged in

Microwave also seems to come on by itself whenever it feels like. i do not thing it is actually cooking but it sounds like it. sometimes it is quiet and other times it is either humming, or the fan is on, or the panel is lit up or it sounds as if it is in use. it is an over the range convection microwave (sharp). no model number as though it was installed in house when house was purchased. thanks for helping.

To many variables and testing needed to explain, but my feeling is that the board is faulty. Have had that happen on a few occasions but with a different brand. On occasion ive seen microwave come on when door is opened but that was loose limit switches for the door latch. Normally humming is due to a faulty magnatron, but it can also be from incorrect voltage onto the magnatron due to the faulty board. Need to concider if repair cost is worth it even though Sharp is excellent microwave. If you do, i would start with the board.

Hi, we have an electrolux builtin microwave.when on standby it occasionally makes a crackling noise not unlike a laptop or storage device when it looks for data. Microwave runs fine otherwise

You really need to be sure it's not running by itself - even intermittently - because that can cause arcing damage, or even a fire.

If you're not sure, leave the door open or the oven unplugged until you're sure it's not or it's fixed.

You can keep a cup of water in it and check it hourly over the course of a day to see if it coming on and actually heating.

It really shouldn't make any noise when idle except a gentle 60Hz hum.

Hi I have a Samsung SMH9187 micowave that is dead (no display, light, fan, mirowave).

Sounds like the main fuse blew. It's either near where the power cord enters the cabinet, or behind the control panel (if an over the range unit).

You may also have some type of failure in the high voltage circuit; based on your description of the symptoms.

Microwave seems to work but does not heat food

OK, you may have a damaged thermostat or, the Magnetron may be damaged as well. you can test each device with a meter(ohm, volt).

replace any parts that dose not register.

We have had problems like this before. Most likely the smartboard is defective.Check with manufacture to see if there is a recall. You should be able to find them on the web.

Makes a loud humming noise while operating

Almost certainly, the component called the "magnetron" has died. This is the valve (tube in the US) which actually generates the microwaves. The loud humming is the transformer that supplies the magnetron being overloaded and/or the magnetron itself. If the rest of the appliance is OK and not too old, the magnetron can be replaced. If you aren't familiar with these appliances, you *must* get this done by someone who understands the dangers of messing with them - if you get it wrong, they can bite! In some countries, only qualified engineers can buy the spare parts. In the UK, the part costs around £40 - £80, depending on the model. If the appliance is more than around three years old, it may be a false economy to repair it as other parts may fail soon after the repair.
