Your problem may be due to corrosion on the contacts inside the camera which can prevent the full power of the batteries from flowing into the camera. Remove the batteries and wipe the camera contacts firmly with a dry cloth (heavy corrosion may require cleaning with a wire brush, steel wool, or sandpaper). Remove any residue that may have fallen into the battery compartment during cleaning, then wipe both ends of the batteries and place them back in the camera. This cleaning clears the problem about 90% of the time. If it doesn't work for you, chances are that your batteries are just too worn to handle the task anymore.

    Same problem for my Cannon A700, I don't think its battery problem, the contacts are clean and I have tried with new batteries as well.

I have a new computer and I have lost any software for my canon powershot a700 digital camera. When I connect my camera to my computer I am unable to access the pictures? Do I need to download software?

windows has its own scanner/camera wizard.
it should start up automaticly when you plug in your camera.
try a different usb port.
otherwise plug in the camera to your computer and then go to "my computer" and look for a icon that corrosponds with your camera. then open it and open the folders in that directory until you find your pictures.

Camera will not connect to laptop

Temporary solution is to take out the memory card from the camera and use the card reader to connect to the PC/laptop. Alternatively, use the MY Computer option and click on Canon PowerShot A700 icon.

Wont take a picture unless I turn off the flash

Here are some simple things to try first for a camera that won't take a picture when the shutter button is pressed, or with an inoperative flash. They won't work for every case, but they're worth a try:

Flash does not fire.

In auto If it does not fire the flash bulb or flash board in camera will need service. In auto it will fire all the time as a fill flash.

Canon A700 black screen when i want to take a picture

Did you accidentally press the DISP or DISPLAY button on the back of your camera? This button manually turns the LCD display on and off to save batteries. Pictures will still appear momentarily when shot.

Help

Check:
1 - If you're on a shooting mode (not on a video mode);
2 - If you have enough power from batteries (maybe flash is necessary and power is not sufficient...);
3 - If memory card is in...
Try it...

Canon A540 flash charge not holding

Some of The Canon Powershot A530 and A540 cameras are subject to a advisory recall. Seems that a small spring on the battery compartment door can short out the batteries. Suspect this of yours, in that you mention that your batteries aren't lasting long. If your camera is on the list, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check the following two links for more info:
