Question about Cell Phones
Go under options, Media Card, and enable mass storage mode. If you can see the card as a removable drive your cable is fine. Just reinstall the newest version of the Blackberry desktop. Also, if you are running Windows 2000, you may want to upgrade to XP. Every version of the desktop after 4.1 has various issues with Win 2000, some minor, some severe.

Try the usb with some other USB devices if it works well with them then it sure is not the cord. Then it could be your usb port on your computer or the blackberry that is giving you problem. Test them both to see which one has the problem. Swap the blackberry on differnt ports on the computer. Do this to trace the problem.
If it's the USB port on the blackberry that's faulty then you'll need to visit a certified technician to do this.
